1,200 Charlotte-area Daimler jobs on chopping block
If Daimler Trucks North America follows through on its expectation to layoff upwards of 1,300 employees in the U.S., North Carolina may bore the brunt of the cuts.
According to a filing posted today to the North Carolina Department of Commerce website, 405 jobs at the Freightliner Truck Plant in Mt. Holly, 80 at Gastonia Components and Logistics in Gastonia, and another 715 at Freightliner Truck Plant in Cleveland are potentially marked for temporary layoff effective April 1.
Daimler currently employs 2,900 workers at its Mount Holly truck and Gastonia parts plants combined, and another 2,100 people work from the manufacturing plant in Cleveland.
If published reports hold true, Daimler’s estimate of 1,300 job cuts nationwide may prove conservative.
Joe Kear, a representative with the International Association of Machinists District W24 Lodge in Portland, Ore., told The Portland Business Journal yesterday he expects 250 workers to be laid off in Portland next month.
That could push the total number of layoffs to 1,450 from the U.S. alone.
