Fluid Leak Detection Dye

Tracer Products has released a new product geared toward uncovering leaks in petroleum-based fluid systems.

According to Tracer, Dye-Lite TP-3100 fluorescent dye pinpoints engine oil, hydraulic fluid, lubrication fluid, compressor oil and gearbox oil leaks.

To use, add a small amount of TP-3100 dye to the system and allow it to circulate for several minutes. Wherever there is a leak, Tracer says the dye escapes with the oil and accumulates at the site of each leak. The company then says to scan the system with a high-intensity Tracerline ultraviolet or blue light lamp. The dye will glow a bright yellow color to reveal the exact location of all leaks.

After the leaks have been repaired, scan the system with the light again. If there is no glow, Tracer says that means that all the leaks were fixed properly.

Battery Oil Additive

Battery De-Mister from Thermoil Co. is a patented battery oil additive that when added to any non-sealed lead acid battery is said to increase battery life while reducing the battery’s need for maintenance.

When a battery is charged that has Battery De-Mister in it, the hydrogen and oxygen gases migrating to the surface are slowed by the oil, virtually eliminating the acid mist and fumes generated in the charging process, the company says.

With virtually no mist and much less gassing, the battery top is said to remain free of acid deposits, while greatly reducing water consumption, toxic fumes and explosions. This is said to eliminate post and cable corrosion while reducing current leakage across the battery cover.

The oil is made of a combination of severely hydro-treated naphthenic base oils and hydrogenated polyalphaolefin synthetic oil coupled with an ashless non-acidic rust inhibitor. Incorporated in the oil are an amine-type anti-oxidant and an olefin copolymer type viscosity modifier.

This base oil mix serves to eliminate polar sites, so the oil does not attach itself to the plates of the battery, thereby preventing the battery from premature failure during deep discharge cycles, the company says.

Ingersoll Rand has unveiled the new W7150 ½ in. high torque cordless impactool.

Weighing 6.8 lbs. and measuring 9.4 in. from tip to tail, the W7150 offers 780 ft.-lbs. reverse torque, and 1100 ft.-lbs. nut-busting torque. The W7150 also features a completely re-engineered high-power rare earth magnet motor, a steel-lined aluminum hammer case and a chemical resistant, patent-pending metal reinforced housing, the company says.

Esco says its tire pressure monitoring system is designed to read and record abnormal air loss over a period of time due to a puncture or leak in the tire/rim and also to detect heat buildup in tires.

Bar’s Leaks has introduced a new cooling sealant product designed to be used during the winter months.

Bar’s Leaks says its cooling sealant is the strongest formula available to permanently seal any coolant leak in plastic, cast iron, copper and aluminum radiators, heater cores, freeze plugs, gaskets, intake manifolds, cylinder heads and engine blocks. Parker Chelsea says power density is what customers will find in the new Chelsea 877 Series power take-off.

The series provides a compact housing that helps eliminate clearance issues and two assembly arrangements that maximize installation possibilities, the company says.

Bridgestone has introduced two new truck tires and a wide-based trailer tire.

The M799 mixed-service drive tire, available in sizes 11R22.5, 11R24.5 and 12R22.5, is suited for on-highway service but also can be used for occasional gravel applications.

The company says the tire has an all-steel casing for added durability and, while a stone-rejecting platform helps prevent rocks from being trapped in the tread and drilling into belts.

Tracer Products has introduced the TP-9360 PRO-Alert, a portable refrigerant leak detector that features high-performance, heated-diode sensor technology to detect refrigerant leaks down to 0.25 oz. per year (7 g/year).

New Marker Lamp

Grote Industries has announced the introduction of its new MicroNova Dot, a family of clearance/marker lamps with dual intensity capabilities that it says is specifically designed to resist the dimming common in other penny-sized LED lamps.

According to Grote, small LED clearance/marker lamps share a flaw — they visibly dim as they age. Heat and negative transients cause this reduction in brightness and functionality, and Grote says its new lamps are designed with a rectifier diode that protects LEDs from the effects of negative transients.

Interchangable Head Torque Wrenches

Stanley Proto has introduced nine new interchangable head torque wrenches and 125 head attachments. The wrenches consist of three electronic, two micrometerand four pre-set versions.

They come in ¼-, 3/8-, and ½-in. drives, with torque values from 25 in-lbs to 250 ft-lbs. The attachments include ratcheting, open-end and box heads, in metric and inch sizes.

The new wrenches allow users to remove the ratchet head and replace it with an open end or box head, whose narrower profile can fit into tighter spaces, according to the company.

The new wrenches also can change heads without having to re-calculate torque values. Each attachment also is marked with a recommended maximum torque value, to prevent over-torquing of fasteners.

Open ends are angled to 15 degrees. Ratcheting heads combine a low profile with a 15 degreee arc swing and a reversing lever design. The 24-tooth configuration fits 4-, 6- and 12-point fasteners. Parker Chelsea has introduced the new 892 series PTO, designed to make hydraulic pump installation simpler in oil field exploration and maintenance trucks.

According to Parker, the 892 series provides maximum clearance for 4700 series transmissions and includes a wet spline system that lubricates the mating PTO and pump shafts. The wet spline system is said to increase the life of these components by seven to 10 times over a dry mating connection.

New Connector

Phillips Industries has added its Clear Vu and Sta-Dry technologies to the new Window Crimp & Seal connector product. The product is designed to provide optimal visual assurance that wires are sealed and crimped properly, and that corrosion build-up is being prevented.

According to Phillips, standard connectors do not allow an installer to see the wire, which if stripped too short or not fully seated properly can result in poor terminations. Phillips claims to have solved those problems with Clear Vu adhesive-lined tubing that allows for easy see-through inspection and guarantees a waterproof seal to prevent corrosion.

Toyo Tires has introduced the new M657 on-highway drive axle position tire for commercial vehicles. This new tire is a U.S. EPA SmartWay verified tire and is designed for long haul, highway applications while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

According to Toyo, the M657 was developed using its e-balance technology that includes a stiffer belt package, stiffer bead construction and optimization through simulation technology. Automated-Manual Transmission For M2 Trucks

Freightliner Trucks has introduced its AMT3 automated-manual transmission for Business Class M2 vehicles. The new transmission technology combines the design principles of a manual transmission with electronics to form an automated two-pedal shift system designed to equalize driver performance and improve fuel economy.

The Freightliner AMT3 eliminates the torque converter and instead couples the engine to the transmission with an hydraulically actuated clutch, resulting in minimal torque interrupt during acceleration and shifting, while providing constant lock-up, the company says.

In addition, clutch control and gear shifts are managed by the transmission control unit. According to Freightliner, TCU’s intelligent shift logic is designed to evaluate road, grade and load conditions to perform shifts at optimal engine RPMs, resulting in fast and smooth shifting and fuel savings.

Refractometer For Diesel Engines

SPX Service Solutions has released the new 5025 refractometer to meet EPA nitrogen oxide (NOx) standards for diesel engines.

The refractometer is a portable, precision, optical instrument used for measuring the DEF concentration, the company says. When a liquid sample is placed on the prism, the light passing through it is bent. The more concentrated the liquid, the more the light will bend.

SPX says the refractometer contains a reticle, or scale, that is enlarged through the eyepiece to measure this light; and the values on the scale have been established to evaluate the DEF condition.

Ultrasonic Diagnostic Tool

Tracer Products has introduced the Tracerline Marksman ultrasonic diagnostic tool, an instrument that Tracer claims converts and amplifies inaudible ultrasonic sound into audible “natural” sound.

According to Tracer, the Marksman can hear sounds that signify problems such as air brake leaks, gear and bearing wear, as well as vacuum, EVAP system, exhaust refrigerant and passenger compartment leaks.

The Marksman uses a two-tiered process to ensure accurate diagnosis. First, Tracer says the receiver unit converts inaudible sound into audible sound using a process known as heterodyning. Then, the receiver’s sound signal technology fine-tunes the audible sound into the natural sound emitted by the defect itself. A 10-bar LED display indicates the intensity of incoming signals from the problem source to ensure error-free diagnosis, according to the company.

PIAA Releases Halogen Bulb

PIAA says it has advanced halogen bulb design with the introduction of its Night-Tech halogen bulb series.

According to the company, the Night-Tech bulbs feature several advancements in performance, durability and manufacturing. Night-Tech technology combines a higher proportion of inert gases with a new filament material, which is said to create a halogen bulb that delivers up to 90 percent more light than a conventional halogen bulb and a 50 percent longer life span.

In addition, Night-Tech’s new combination of gases, filament material and glass coatings creates a color temperature in the 3600 Kelvin range — a light output PIAA says is whiter than standard bulbs — yet retains critical DOT/SAE approval. The company says the bulb also delivers a range of up to 35 meters longer than conventional halogen bulbs.

Goodyear introduced its G572 LHD drive tire with Fuel Max Technology, which features 30/32nds of tread. The tire is SmartWay-verified.

The G572 LHD features Goodyear’s exclusive TredLock Technology, which interlocks microgrooves to stabilize the tread for enhanced tread life while promoting even wear, the company says.

The G572 LHD’s belt package features four ultra-tensile steel belts to reinforce the tread while giving the tire a solid foundation for retreading.

Tire Runout Gauge

K-Line Industries has introduced a tire runout gauge that measures both radial and lateral tire runout conditions. According to K-Line, the use of this tool can help eliminate irregular tire wear, ride vibration and lengthens the life of tires.

K-Line’s Tire Runout Gauge utilizes a roller wheel placed against the tire tread combined with a gauge bar, individual low and high spot sliders and a magnified measurement readout that quickly shows the amount of runout present, the company says.

If the runout exceeds the stated limits, K-Line claims a check can be made and repairs completed for the possible reasons including bent or cocked rims, improperly adjusted wheel bearings, improper tire bead seating, tire flat spots, improperly tightened rim clamps and rear rim spacers.

The runout gauge is said to pinpoint problems either directly related to the tire and rim or some other trouble areas that may be causing runout. It is also said to be an early indicator of wheels and/or tires that need to be reworked or discarded.

Yokohama Tire Corporation’s two latest tires are the RY407 wide-base single trailer tire and the prototype 702 drive tire. The RY407 is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay-certified tire recognized for low rolling resistance.

The super single, size 445/50R22.5, offers improved durability and less casing fatigue high-tech compounds designed to enhance fuel efficiency; a zero-degree mid-belt designed to distribute the load evenly, lessen running distortion and provide a more consistent footprint; straight grooves for enhanced wet traction; and cross sipes for wear resistance.

Lug locking device

SKF introduces its lug lock device, a mechanism designed to alert maintenance personnel of a loosened wheel nut before it backs off the stud.

The lug lock is constructed with flexible slits that allow it to slip onto the nut while maintaining the ability to tightly grip the OD of the nut. The slip-on locks interconnect with the hub piloted wheel to provide a visual alert of a loose wheel nut . Additionally, the lug lock helps maintain the proper wheel nut torque to allow the tires to run truer, leading to reduced fuel consumption. The lug lock resists water, road salt and debris to withstand the harsh environments of North America, the company says.

New battery power indicator released

Phillips Industries has introduced the new Battery Status Indicator, designed to show the power available in any truck battery with one look. It monitors the state of power for any battery, particularly lift-gate batteries, and alerts operators during pre-trip inspections when a battery may be lower than required.

According to Phillips, when battery voltage is more than 12.4 volts or 75 percent power, the Battery Status Indicator flashes a green light. When the voltage falls to 12.39 volts or below, the light will blink red to indicate the battery needs to be charged or changed.

Rotary Lift has released the new Wireless Mach 4 column lift. The lift is powered by batteries and communicates with other columns wirelessly.

According to Rotary Lift, the wireless lift is configured just once a day to eliminate downtime and is operated by a patent-pending control panel. The panel features a graphic layout of the column set-up, on-board diagnostics, easy-to-read LEDs and one-touch controls.

New Gladhand Products

Phillips Industries has added new shut-off gladhand products for double trailers to its product line. The products are two zinc die-cast surface mount gladhands and two new bulkhead mounts. HVAC seat-based system introduced

Delphi has released a new HVAC seat-based system. The system is part of Delphi’s E3 seat, and combines Delphi’s Diavia application capability with the Cobo group’s steering column, seat, lighting and electronic devices.

According to Delphi, the E3 HVAC system has a cooling capacity of 6.2 kW and a heating capacity of 5.8 kW and can provide climate controls for the cab only or cab and seat cushion. The E3’s control unit is located inside the seat arm.

Dometic has introduced a new auxiliary electric heater for vehicles needing extra heat in very cold climates. The new electric modules are available in 2.5 or 4.0 kW sizes, and each module uses multiple heater coils with a two-stage heating control to provide temperature control and energy efficiency. The Fabco Division of the Accuride Corporation has released a new steerable drive axle. The FSD-23 steerable drive axle is designed to provide a lighter weight and lower height solution for heavy-duty all-wheel drive vehicles, the company says.

New Engine Coolant Tool Introduced

K-Line Industries has released its new Coolant Management Tool. According to K-Line, the new tool drains, pressure tests and refills coolant systems cleanly and efficiently, saving time and minimizing costs. The K-Line tool is said to eliminate coolant air pockets, prevent the mixing of unwanted coolants and contribute to green shop initiatives.

The Coolant Management Tool has a 20-gallon tank and cart assembly on wheels, a coolant reservoir cap adapter, a vacuum module and a pressure module.

To use the tool attach it to the truck cooling system. Cean, dry shop air is used to “blow” coolant out of system and into the 20-gallon tank. With the system empty, the necessary repairs can be made and pressure checked before the cooling system is refilled.

Heavy-Duty U-joints

Dana Holding Corporation has introduced a line of permanently lubricated, heavy-duty U-joints. The new SPL-250 and SPL-170 are designed for main and tandem-drive inter-axle driveshaft applications.

Dana has beefed up the performance and durability of its entire line of SPL heavy-duty U-joints to coincide with the introduction of the SPL-250 and SPL-170. Enhancements include a new bearing package with larger needle bearing for increased capacity, a Viton synthetic seal for improved grease retention and a thermoplastic seal guard to better protect against grease contamination.

The new SPL U-joints now are available to all heavy-duty truck OEMs. Warranty coverage of up to four years or 400,000 miles is available for linehaul applications.

Cube Work Lamp Available

Grote Industries introduces its new 4-in.-by-4-in. Trilliant Cube LED WhiteLight Work Lamp.

The lamp is the newest member of Grote’s Trilliant LED WhiteLight Work Lamp Portfolio.

It was specifically designed to fit a 4-in. (10 cm) square format.

The lamp has a service rating in the range of 50,000 hours and features two beam patterns. Grote says it has further refined its wide flood pattern to produce a more penetrating beam that reaches farther.

The lamp comes in three versions, each with a unique connector style. The female receptacle on the back of the first version of the lamp accommodates the AMP connector style, the second version of the lamp features an AMP Superseal connector style, while the third version supports the Deutsch two-pin sealed connector.

The “app” can be downloaded from the Luber-finer website, and the company says it is designed to provide installers with one-click access to filter product searches and cross-reference information.

Eaton Expands Aftermarket Portfolio

Eaton Corp. launched a new brand of drivetrain components engineered specifically for the aftermarket. The new lineup, known as EverTough, provides aftermarket customers with the balance of price and performance to meet their replacement part needs, the company says. The initial EverTough offering is a new line of heavy-duty clutches.

To ensure the EverTough clutches have reliability and durability at a competitive aftermarket price, Eaton has designed the clutch with an aftermarket-specific facing, a release system with standard dual zerk fittings and dampeners to meet the torsional vibration needs of the aftermarket. In addition, lube intervals are set at 25,000 miles to reduce maintenance costs.

With torque ratings available up to 2,050 ft-lb the clutches are available in both 14-in. and 15.5-in. heavy-­duty designs for all makes of diesel-­powered commercial trucks. Additionally, the clutches include a one-year unlimited mileage warranty.

Bendix Launches EverSure Spring Brake

Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC announces a new, next-generation double-diaphragm spring brake for drum brakes that is said to offer the lightest weight in the industry while delivering best-in-class durability and performance.

The new Bendix EverSure spring brake with No Touch technology is now in production. It is designed to industry-standard dimensions, making it easy to install as a replacement part in the aftermarket.

The EverSure spring brake is said to be more than two pounds lighter than competitive spring brakes. The product’s lighter weight also is said to lead to the best vibration resistance in the industry. Lower vibration levels help prolong the life of the spring brake and supporting components.

Another key advancement in the new spring brake is the elimination of contact between compressed power spring coils, allowing the protective coating to remain intact and resulting in significantly better corrosion resistance than competitive products, the company says.

According to the company, the power spring was designed to avoid coil contact damage, which leads to corrosion, and ultimately spring brake failure.

BSFB also says it optimized the diaphragm geometry of the EverSure spring brake. While it is also available in the aftermarket, the EverSure spring brake exceeds all compliance requirements for performance and durability in original equipment use.

High Output 6.7L Turbo Diesel

Cummins Inc. announced the release of its high output 6.7L turbo diesel for Ram heavy-duty pickup trucks. This new high-output rating produces more torque to a peak of 800 lb-ft (1,085 N•m).

With 800 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm, power is increased across a wide speed range of 1200-2700 rpm. This delivers up to 46 additional hp at typical highway cruising speeds while maintaining 350 horsepower at 3000 rpm, the company says.

Cummins will begin producing its new engines at its Columbus MidRange Engine Plant in the second quarter of this year. The engines will be available in Ram heavy-duty pickup trucks with the automatic transmission option.

Along with the new 800 lb-ft torque rating, the Cummins 6.7L turbo diesel offers an integrated exhaust brake, with a full 222 braking horsepower at the wheel.

New Heavy-Duty Rotor Lathe

Hunter’s new OCL430HD rotor lathe is said to improve medium- and heavy-duty service by machining the rotor on the vehicle. Hub-mounted service eliminates the need to disassemble the hub to remove the rotor, saving time and effort. Machining the rotor on the hub also reduces runout, providing a more precise cut and extending the life of expensive rotors, the company says.

The OCL430HD includes all of the operational features of Hunter’s OCL410 light-vehicle brake lathe, yet adds more robust lathe components to handle larger rotors.

With a reinforced cutting arm and rugged tool holders, the OCL430HD resurfaces rotors up to 17.5 in. in diameter and up to 3.5-in. thick. A 1.5-hp, 230 VAC motor provides the additional torque required for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

The patented ServoDrive system enables technicians to vary the spindle speed and rotational torque of the lathe while in operation. This ability is said to allow the technician to adjust the speed “on the fly” without compromising the final surface finish.

ServoDrive also provides the capabilities needed to activate other patented features including computerized compensation and anti-chatter safeguards.

Pro-Comp computerized compensation adjusts for lateral runout with a push of a button and a single-point adjustment, allowing the technician to complete the machining of the rotor within OEM specifications.

ACT (Anti-Chatter Technology) minimizes machining problems by virtually eliminating chatter, the company says. ACT oscillates the speed of the lathe while machining the rotor to prevent the buildup of vibration that can occur on any fixed-speed lathe, requiring extra time to install chatter-dampening accessories.

New Suspensions Released

Ridewell recently released RWB-QUAD, a new series of rigid walking beam (RWB) suspensions. The new four-axle RWB suspensions are available in 120,000 lb. and 200,000 lb. capacities using 5-in. and 5¾-in. axles.

Axle spacing is available in 50 in. and 56 in., and beam spacing can be customized to customer requirements. Part numbers will be generated upon customer request.

The company also introduces the RAR-260 trailer suspension family. Tall mounting height 25K capacity overslung RAR-260 suspensions now are available with weld-on and bolt-on hangers. The bolt pattern for these suspensions is compatible with industry standard bolt-on patterns.

RAR-260 also now offers tall mounting height 30K weld-ons, and a full line of 30K bolt-on overslung suspensions. Bolt patterns for these suspensions also are compatible with industry standard bolt-on patterns. These suspensions are available in mounting heights ranging from 15 in. to 24 in.

Also released into the RAR-260 family is a high-travel 30K overslung. This suspesion has a new hanger that allows for up-travel at a 17-in. mounting height. At this mounting height, the travels are 4.2-in. up-travel and 3.0-in. down-travel.

Volvo Trucks Introduces Lightweight Fifth Wheel System

Working in conjunction with Fontaine Fifth Wheel, Volvo Trucks North America developed a new lower assembly that supports both the fifth wheel and the truck frame. This design allowed engineers to reconfigure the fifth wheel top plate as well, without sacrificing stability, strength or durability, the company says. The cast steel top plate weighs just 165 pounds.

The integrated frame-mount system incorporates Fontaine’s top plate lock design that prevents high hitching of the trailer kingpin, as well as a secondary lock. Air actuation with in-cab release — operable only when the parking brake is engaged — is an available option. The new fifth wheel can handle a vertical load of 50,000 lbs. and a drawbar pull of 150,000 lbs, which is typical for on-highway applications.
