There was little sign of an economic downturn at the annual Heavy Duty America (HDA) shareholder meeting last month in Indianapolis, with both the volume of attendees and their optimism high.

The event, held Aug. 19-23, drew more than 500 attendees and there were 120 suppliers exhibiting across 21,000 square feet. The theme of the meeting was “Power of One,” which HDA President Pat Biermann said shows that “HDA and its membership continue to be No. 1 in the industry. Our goal is to tie the best distributors, best vendors and best fleets together to all benefit each other.”

The meeting included training on best practices in a variety of areas, including sales and promotions, a performance review from HDA member fleet customers, and a tour of ArvinMeritor’s remanufacturing facility in Plainfield, Ind.

“Overall the meeting was very well attended and the information each member and supplier gained will further strengthen the HDA ‘Power of One’ direction,” said Biermann. “The training was very well received and we plan on doing even more next year.”

Paccar Parts Offers CARB-approved Aftermarket DPF
Paccar Parts describes the Engine Control Systems Purifilter as an aftermarket passively regenerating diesel particulate filter approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for installation and use in a wide variety of Class 8 truck models. Paccar Parts distributes the device exclusively through Kenworth and Peterbilt dealers in the United States and Canada.

Engine Control Systems said the Purifilter – which features a silicon carbide filter to facilitate exceptional regeneration, performance and durability – is approved for use with a wide variety of model year 1993-2006 heavy-duty trucks in a number of on-highway applications, regardless of manufacturer. The Purifilter also has received conditional verification from CARB for use with certain 1996-2008 off-road diesel engines that are rated at least 50 hp, but no more than 750 hp; the verification covers engines certified for off-road use on equipment such as trucks, loaders, dozers and skidders.

Each Purifilter model is available in five different inlet/outlet configurations with either standard stamped flanges or optional machined flanges. The 100 percent stainless-steel modular design allows for 360-degree rotation of the muffler inlet and outlet sections to provide the greatest range of fit. The dimensions of a Purifilter vary depending on application; the smallest filter weighs about 75 pounds and is 10 inches in diameter (11 5⁄8-inch diameter at the mating flanges) and measures 38 inches in length (including inlet and outlet tubes). The largest filter weighs about 125 pounds and is 13 inches in diameter (15 inches at the mating flanges) and measures 43 inches in length.

Parker Chelsea Reduces Installation Time
Parker Chelsea announced it is now offering a PTO and dump pump (the 277 Series PTO and Commercial G102 Series Dump Pump) system that makes installation easier and quicker with Allison 3000 and 4000 series transmissions.
According to the announcement, “through the combined efforts of Chelsea and Commercial we are able to offer a PTO and dump pump

system that gives you clearance underneath the truck when using an Allison automatic transmission. The combination of a higher speed PTO and smaller displacement pump provide you with clearance and a cost effective system to overcome your installation problems.”

New Master Battery Disconnect Switch
Cole Hersee Company introduced its new 75920 Master Battery Disconnect Switch that cuts off all battery power from the vehicle electrical system. The company said the new switch is an effective emergency power cutoff device to protect vehicles from tampering, theft and battery drain.

Additionally, it provides service technicians with an extra level of safety, protecting them from hazards, and can be locked-out or tagged-out to satisfy OSHA requirements for energy isolation, according to Cole Hersee Company.

The 75920 Master Battery Disconnect Switch has a composite engineered polymer housing that the company said will not rust or corrode. The switch has been tested per SAE 1455 for road salt, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride, and it is waterproof to IP67. It has a high amperage capacity of 300A at 12V DC, can be used in high-side or low-side applications, and fits the standard Master Disconnect Switch mounting pattern.

BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems, Aftermarket Division, released the S410T replacement turbocharger for late-model Mercedes MBE4000 engines. BorgWarner said its replacement turbos have been manufactured or remanufactured under the same strict quality standards set forth by the company for their original equipment products, including TS14649.

The company said its S410T replacement turbocharger, which is covered by a one-year or 100,000-mile repair or replace warranty, will be available through the network of BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems North American service partners.

Flexible Form-A-Funnel Molds to Meet Needs
New Pig Corporation introduced the Form-A-Funnel, a flexible tool that bends, molds and holds its shape to fit applications where liquids, leaks or drips need to be drained, diverted or transferred.

The Form-A-Funnel is constructed of a moldable lead interior and fully coated with thick and pliable rubber, and is chemical resistant and safe to handle, according to the company.
New Pig said the funnel can be shaped to channel, catch and divert hard-to-drain liquids directly into a container, keeping drips off of equipment and floors, reducing the potential for slips and falls. It is easy to clean and will retain its shape until its next application, or can be flattened out or rolled up and stored in a tool box.

Detroit Diesel Launches Advanced Diagnostics Features
Detroit Diesel Corporation announced the launch of new advanced diagnostics features for its Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL) available for heavy-duty engines and compatible with the company’s full line of engines.

The company said the DDDL’s enhanced features provide service technicians an interactive tool by not just reading diagnostic data, but interpreting it and automatically determining next steps. A sophisticated troubleshooting tree provides step-by-step diagnostics to help technicians quickly and easily address issues.

Additional features include encrypted videos and animation clips that further aid in diagnoses. On-screen graphics also serve as a teaching tool for technicians. Technicians can also use the DDDL to report back to Detroit Diesel’s support center, which helps Detroit Diesel engineers monitor and evaluate repairs being made, enhancing continuous engine and technology improvements, the company said.

Minimizer Introduces Hardcore Quarter Fenders for OTR Trucks
New, larger Minimizer quarter fenders designed for the over-the-road truck market are now available from Spray Control Systems Inc.

The quarter fenders, according to the company, feature breakthrough interior ribbing to direct road spray and damaging stones down off mirrors, tanks, trailers and oncoming traffic. The design hides mounting brackets on the inside for a smooth, seamless look.

The company said additional features of its Minimizer quarter fenders include:

Contoured design for enhanced visual appeal;

Lightweight kit includes one pair of fenders (20 lbs. total);

Optional custom logo on spray guard flap;

Compact Trailblazer Combines Welder, Generator and More
Mobile service and repair operations can benefit from the Trailblazer 302 Air Pak from Miller Electric Mfg. Co. that combines an air compressor, generator and welder into one unit that saves up to 50 percent of the space that would be required for individual units.

The truck-mounted unit’s rotary screw air compressor produces 26 CFM at 100 percent of its duty cycle and delivers 70 to 160 PSI, according to the company. Additionally, the generator provides up to 13,000 watts and the welder produces up to 350 amps.

With the reduced real estate comes reduced axle weight, up to 25 percent. The Trailblazer 302 Air Pak has a 30 horsepower, gasoline-powered Kohler engine.

The company said the unit runs most air impact wrenches at idle and provides 100 percent deliverable air, which allows technicians to work continuously without worrying about air pressure.

The multi-process machine provides strong Stick, MIG, flux cored, AC/DC TIG and air carbon arc gouging and cutting performance with: 25 to 300 amps of DC output for Stick; 10 to 300 amps of DC output for TIG; 10 to 225 amps for AC TIG/Stick; and 13 to 35 volts (350 amps) for MIG and flux-cored welding. It has two generators, one for welding and one for power generation, to help ensure the welding arc remains stable when power tools are being used.

Michelin Adds Antisplash to XZA3 Tire
Michelin said its XZA3 Antisplash tire helps lower the trajectory of water spraying from the tires, meaning less water on windshields and improving overall visibility in heavy rain for oncoming and overtaking motorists, as well as truck drivers.

The tire maker says the XZA3 Antisplash builds upon its XZA3 all-position tire; advanced technology compounding with 19/32nds tread depth helps reduce the tire’s rolling resistance and increase fuel efficiency, and with an 80 percent wider shoulder rib than the XZA2 Antisplash, the XZA3 Antisplash offers enhanced resistance to uneven shoulder wear. The XZA3 Antisplash’s directional miniature sipes in the groove walls help defend against the onset of irregular wear and contribute to long original tread life, while the casing’s durability and endurance are designed to facilitate multiple retreads.

According to Michelin, the Antisplash feature reduces splash trajectory height by more than 50 percent compared to standard truck tires. Unlike the XZA2 Antisplash that had the feature only on one side, the new tire features the Antisplash deflector on both sidewalls of the tire. The company says the new tire is directional to half life, allowing for tire rotation later in life. The all-position radial tire, optimized for splash reduction in steer axle service, is available in the 275/80R22.5 LRH size.

Spraydown Splash Guard System Improves Safety
The Spraydown System replaces traditional mudflap spray diffusion with functional air flow management that separates air and water to improve driver safety through spray reduction, according to Koneta. Koneta recently reached an agreement with Scotland-based Spraydown for exclusive distribution rights of the products in North America and Japan.

In addition to improving safety, the company said fuel efficiency is increased, saving fleets money and reducing their environmental impact. The fuel savings is estimated at up to 3.8 percent. Spray reduction is estimated at 43 percent.

Spraydown guards use traditional mudflap brackets for installation on both tractors and trailers. These guards work as a system to direct air flow under the vehicle. By channeling this undercurrent, the company said, drag reduction is measurably enhanced, and the flow dynamics predominantly channel the spray through the engineered air/water separation capabilities of the guard. Koneta said full distribution of the Spraydown guards begins this month.

Red Dot Introduces Powered Filtration System
Red Dot Corp. introduced a new powered filtration system – the Precleaner/Filter/Pressurizer with Gideon Technology – for severe-service applications. The company said the system is designed to protect operators from harmful particulates and extend HVAC service intervals on machines with enclosed cabs.

The Precleaner/Filter/Pressurizer draws debris-laden air into a precleaner where the largest particles are removed and discharged back into the environment. Smaller particles are then captured using one of two filtration options: a high-capacity filter which provides a general level of protection (MERV 8), or a high-efficiency filter that can capture 99.97 percent of particles down to 0.3 microns, according to Red Dot. The high-efficiency option delivers High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (HEPA) level filtration.

Red Dot said the air that passes through the precleaner and filter media can be used to pressurize the cab and prevent dirty air from blowing back into the re-circulation filter and into the cab vent.

Dust and other particulates are leading causes of premature HVAC component failure, especially the evaporator, which is responsible for absorbing heat in the cab and moving it outside. “By protecting the evaporator coils, the Red Dot Precleaner/Filter/Pressurizer promotes better HVAC performance and uptime,” said Robert Gardiner, marketing manager for Red Dot.

According to Red Dot, older filtration technologies draw large quantities of dirty air over the filter. The Red Dot Precleaner/Filter/Pressurizer is different because it removes particles from the air before the air reaches the filter, which can prolong service life to 1,000 hours for high-capacity filters. For many customers, the projected return on investment is less than a year, Gardiner said.

The Red Dot Precleaner/Filter/Pressurizer with Gideon Technology was developed by Sy-Klone International, a leader in precleaning air and filtration systems for commercial applications. It is available from Red Dot for original equipment applications and from Red Dot’s distributor network for aftermarket applications.

Smart Battery Isolator Prevents Draining
Cole Hersee Company introduced its new Smart Battery Isolator 48525 and 48530 that prevents loads on the auxiliary battery from draining the starting battery.

The smart battery isolator provides a more flexible solution than traditional isolators, according to the company, as it is not specific to an alternator type. Additionally, Cole Hersee said the smart battery isolator is smaller, lighter and generates less heat than competitive products.

Because the smart battery isolator reduces charging system workload by not connecting to the auxiliary battery until the primary battery is charged to 13.2 V, there is lower strain on expensive charging components, extending the product life.

No diode efficiency losses occur when using Cole Hersee’s smart battery isolator, and it also allows bi-directional charging from alternator or from other power chargers/converters. Easy to install, the smart battery isolator also features an LED status indicator and operational start assist. The Smart Battery Isolator is available in 85A and 200A versions.
