GenNext hosted its second webinar of 2015 yesterday with an engaging discussion on leadership from Peter Palmer and John Deane of Dale Carnegie training.
The webinar, titled “Getting Results without Authority,” focused on using clear, accountable and positive communication to motivate employees in the workplace.
Using the tenets of Dale Carnegie’s timeless book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” the duo discussed four key elements of influence that lead to results.
Palmer described the elements as follows: develop personal influence, build trust, credibility and respect, use a consistent questioning process and hold others accountable.
Palmer says each element works to strengthen an employee’s relationship with coworkers and superiors, and builds on the one established before. Speaking specifically to trust, credibility and respect, Palmer says those three elements ultimately work together to create one’s principles. And Palmer says the three elements should function in unison, as there are aspects of each that translate into other areas.
Regarding questioning and accountability, Palmer says stability is an absolute necessity. Being direct and impartial also matter, as they show coworkers that questions or directives aren’t coming from a point of personal bias.
