Bendix reman brake shoe facility hits milestone

Updated Apr 1, 2014

Less than 18 months after its launch, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems’ remanufactured brake shoe operation has surpassed the 1.5-million-unit production milestone.

“With RSD in full effect as of August 2013, and an increased focus in the commercial vehicle industry on CSA scores, vehicle operators are looking to control risk and limit liability by selecting higher-quality, RSD-compliant shoes from a respected original equipment supplier,” says Henry Foxx, Bendix director of remanufactured products. “We’ve achieved our goal of providing our customers with OE quality in a reman brake shoe. Since our reman brake shoes are actually brought back to OE specifications and not just relined, they deliver the high level of durability, reliability, performance, and extended lining life necessary for safety and compliance in today’s industry.”

Bendix began serial production of reman shoes at its 70,000-square-foot Huntington, Ind., facility in the fall of 2012.

The Bendix Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Center combines Bendix’s nearly 40 years’ experience in remanufacturing with Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake’s acknowledged leadership in wheel-end solutions and brake shoe manufacturing. Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC (BSFB) is a joint venture between Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Products, LLC.

Bendix coins 100 percent of its brake shoes to return the shoe to OE geometry so it will perform as designed by OE engineers. Additionally, to provide longer service life, Bendix says its reman shoes feature a salt-spray-tested coating that virtually eliminates rust jacking. Finally, to ensure correct lining attachment for maximum lining service, Bendix says reman shoes are assembled with the same riveting procedure used in OE production.

“When it’s a Bendix brake shoe, we don’t just assemble it and put it in a box,” Foxx says. “Multiple quality checks and end-of-line testing – part of the stringent quality standards in place for all Bendix products – ensure that customers get a product they can count on.”
