Class 8 year-over-year numbers 'kind of hard to get your head around'

Article Summary

Class 8 truck orders surged 241% year-over-year in June, driven by fleet replacement needs, EPA regulation clarity, and capacity tightening rather than volume growth. Freight rates have climbed 45-55% above last year, supported by strong demand from data center construction and increased bulk oil exports.

  • Class 8 truck orders increased 241% year-over-year in June, marking a significant rebound from the prior year's weak performance.
  • Freight rates are running 45-55% higher than last year, driven by capacity tightening rather than increased freight volume.
  • Data center construction and AI infrastructure development are major growth drivers, though this impact is narrowly focused and not a broad industrial boom.

It's no news last year's data showed an abysmal year for the trucking industry. That's highlighted by this year's data.

Amid a moderate, capacity-driven recovery in the industry, there are eye-popping figures. Like the 241% increase, year over year, in truck orders for June, a number FTR's Vice President of Trucking says is "kind of hard to get your head around."

A lot of factors go into those numbers, Vise says, including a need for replacement in fleets, clarity on EPA regulations and more certainty on federal trade policies. Freight rates are also higher, but they aren't driven by volume in the market. Rather, it's a tightening of capacity that accounts for the uptick, FTR analysts say.

Dry van and refrigerated freight rates have both steadily stepped up over the last few months while flatbed rates are just off all-time highs, riding a wave of data center construction and some recovery in the industrial sector.

"It's still kind of following seasonal expectations but it's more or less doing so at strong levels," Vise says, adding rates are running 45-55% higher than last year.

Jonathan Starks, CEO of FTR, says there's growth, albeit slow, in the manufacturing sector with new orders for durable goods increasing. Housing starts are stuck, not overly negative but also not growing, he says. Where the data really spikes are from the construction of AI infrastructure such as data centers.

"It's a very directed impact," he says. "It is not a broad, overall industrial or manufacturing boon."

Class8 Order

There's also growth in the goods transport sector but it's not approaching the levels Starks likes to see. Bulk exports are up 15.6% this year, Starks says, mainly on crude oil exports to other countries exacerbated by the Iranian conflict. Many countries, Senior Analyst Joseph Towers says, are importing more than 100% more American oil than in previous years.

The active Class 8 population is also growing even though the truck utilization is expected to grow a little in the most extreme forecast but the more likely modest scenario shows it sinking a little through 2027. The company's Trucking Conditions Index in May was at its highest level ever.

"This was almost completely driven by freight rates and somewhat, to a lesser extent, utilization," Vise says. "It was not driven by volume."

Starks also predicts more Class 8 inventory coming into the system. Obviously, he says, orders are up, which is going to drive production and build inventory into the system. He doesn't see any supply constraints coming, but we really won't know until September and October if there's any pressure in the supply chain.

"We don't see anything yet," he says.
