FET repeal bill adds congressional support

Last week, U.S. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) became the 24th member of Congress to cosponsor H.R. 2381, the “Modern, Clean and Safe Trucks Act of 2019,” a bill to repeal the 12 percent federal excise tax (FET) levied on the sale of new heavy-duty trucks and trailers.

“Congressman Ruppersberger’s support for this important legislation is another sign that FET repeal is gaining momentum,” says Steve Parker, president and CEO, Baltimore Truck Center and former chairman of the American Truck Dealers. “This 102-year-old tax is a burden to the trucking industry. Abolishing this tax will help modernize the truck fleet and get cleaner and safer trucks on the road sooner.”

Congressman Ruppersberger is serving his 9th term in Congress representing northeast Maryland.

“The trucking industry is extremely important in Maryland, providing more than 116,000 jobs,” Parker adds.
