U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) recently visited I-State Truck Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., for a roundtable discussion and a tour of the facility.

Dutch Van Santen, dealership branch manager, and Myron Rau, president of the South Dakota Auto Dealers Association and South Dakota Trucking Association, guided Rep. Johnson through the dealership’s service bays and body shop, and discussed federal policies impacting the truck industry, according to American Truck Dealers (ATD).

H.R. 2381, the “Modern, Clean and Safe Trucks Act of 2019,” was a focus of the meeting. The bill would repeal the 12 percent federal excise tax (FET) levied on the sale of new heavy-duty commercial trucks and trailers.

“Rep. Johnson understands the importance of repealing the FET and the economic benefit of getting rid of the tax,” Rau says.

Serving in his first term, Rep. Johnson sits on the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Agriculture Committee.

“I-State Truck Center was proud to host Rep. Johnson. He showed great interest in our business and employees. Repealing the FET will give I-State’s customers more freedom to choose the safest, newest and most efficient trucks available by eliminating thousands of dollars in additional costs,” Van Santen says.
