Collision Avoidance System with Active Braking
Meritor Wabco Control Systems introduced OnGuard, a new technology designed to further improve commercial vehicle safety.
OnGuard is a forward-looking, radar-based adaptive cruise control system with active braking for commercial vehicles in North America. Active braking improves vehicle safety by automatically using the vehicle’s foundation brakes to alert the driver and decelerate the vehicle when a pre-set vehicle following distance is compromised.
Automatic foundation brake intervention distinguishes OnGuard from existing passive collision warning systems, which alert the driver to a potentially dangerous situation through an alarm and engine braking. With OnGuard, if the pre-determined “safe” distance is compromised, the system will provide visual and audible warning to the driver, vehicle deceleration through engine control, retarder control and noticeable foundation braking.
Foundation brake deceleration can be as great as one-third of a full brake application for the vehicle, but within safe limits for the driver to take control.
OnGuard fully integrates with Meritor Wabco’s anti-lock braking and stability control systems.
The system’s forward-looking mono-pulse radar sensor is capable of detecting multiple moving and fixed objects at distances up to 500 feet away. It coordinates responses from the engine, transmission and anti-lock braking systems through communications across the SAE J1939 data network.

New Clutch Lift Tool
A new patented clutch lift tool – the Model 1550 – from The Clutch Job, Inc. requires only 16 inches of separation between the flywheel and clutch housings for easy installations of clutch assemblies by one technician, according to the company.
The company notes that no floor space is required because the Model 1550 lifts from the engine and that no manual lifting of the clutch is required. Technicians can complete a job – from unboxing the new clutch to the final torqueing of pressure retaining bolts – in as little as 11 minutes, the company says.

Self-Sealing Tire Technology
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has adapted its self-sealing commercial tire technology on a broader scale for use on long-haul trucks.
The new Unisteel G316 LHT line-haul trailer featuring DuraSeal Technology allows semi-trucks to continue operating after a tire is punctured by road debris up to /-inch diameter in the repairable tread area.
Already proven in mixed-service applications such as logging, construction and mining, the technology uses a gel-like, solvent-free compound built into the inner liner of the tire. It constantly and instantly seals punctures with gel flowing into void areas and around objects less than /-inch in diameter.
The new tire features an all-steel, four-belt package. A solid shoulder rib and pressure distribution groove help resist shoulder wear, according to the company.
The G316 LHY and matching retreads have a 12⁄32-inch tread.

Complete Leak Detection Kit
Tracer Products has introduced a special leak detection kit that it says makes it easy for technicians to find all air conditioning and fluid leaks the first time.
The TP-8649 Optimax Jr./Mini-EZ kit features the Optimax Jr high-intensity leak detection flashlight with a 100,000-hour LED bulb. This compact leak detector is powered by three AA batteries, which are included. It has an inspection range of more than six feet, with power comparable to 75 watt lamps.
Also included in the kit are the Mini-EZ A/C dye injector (with hose assembly, 1⁄4-inch flare check valve, R-134a coupler for low side injection and an R-12 purge fitting), plus six R-134a/PAG Mini-EZ dye cartridges with co-solvent free Fluoro-Lite fluorescent dye.
Each disposable dye cartridge services one vehicle. Further leak detection is provided with a 1-oz. bottle of Dye-Lite All-In-One concentrated oil dye and a 1-oz. bottle of Dye-Lite Rite-Blend extended-life coolant dye.
Everything, including fluorescence-enhancing glasses, is stored in a sturdy plastic carrying case.

Ratchet Crimping Tool
Del City now offers an ergonomic ratchet crimping tool with four crimp stations, ranging from 22 through 8 gauge. The tool’s crimp nests are color coded to allow the user to quickly match the correct terminal.
The mating mechanism on the tool prevents the jaws from slipping or misaligning. The tool features a long handle to make it easier to crimp with a minimal amount of force, according to the company.
A release switch near the handle is easy to understand and use, operating with a simple push towards the crimp nest.
It is designed for heat shrink terminals and also can be used for standard insulated terminals.

Nitrite-free Extended Life Coolant
Chevron’s Delo brand has introduced Delo Extended Life Coolant/Antifreeze-Nitrite Free (Delo ELC-NF). It is recommended for use in on- and off-road heavy-duty equipment requiring a nitrite-free OAT formulation.
The new coolant offers a service life of 600,000 miles, 12,000 hours or six years with no chemical extender needed. According to the company, other benefits include: excellent corrosion protection and lower electrical conductivity; exceptional protection against pitting, corrosion and erosion; superb heat transfer; and improved water pump life.
It is available in pails, drums and bulk.

Red Dot Corp. has published its 2008 catalog of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units and all-makes replacement parts. The 656-parts catalog features more than 3,000 Red Dot heating and air-conditioning units and components. It is available in three formats: print, CD or online as Adobe .pdf files.
The company’s units and replacement parts are used in commercial trucks, buses and vehicles in construction, mining, agriculture, fire and rescue applications.
The illustrated catalog lists the model, part and factory numbers for each HVAC unit or component, as well as critical dimensions and a photograph. For 2008, the company has expanded the section that lists items by OEM application.

EnerSys recently released its new Odyssey battery heavy-duty/commercial product guide. The guide outlines the eight Odyssey battery models available for commercial vehicles. It also provides details about Odyssey Ultimizer chargers.

Motor Wheel Commercial Vehicle Systems, Inc. has launched its CentriSet Trailer Hub System, a pre-adjusted, low maintenance, low weight wheel-end system. Currently available for N and P spindle trailer applications, the long-life hub systems carry a 5 year/500,000 mile warranty.
The system begins with a lightweight ductile iron hub for higher strength and increased resistance to damage, according to the company. CentriSet incorporates premium bearing components and an advanced, high-performance seal to help ensure low-maintenance operation.
The system features built-in bearing settings so no installation adjustment is required.

Round Head Ratchets
Stanley Proto is replacing its line of round head ratchets with a more user-friendly design with a high-toque capacity. The new design has a compact circular head that’s smaller than the head on a pear head ratchet. It offers a free-spinning bearing ring and an ergonomically designed thumbwheel for reversing direction.
The launch includes seven individual ratchets in 1⁄4 inch, 3⁄8 inch and 1⁄2 inch drive sizes. Four of the new ratchets have standard round heads, while three offer flex-round heads. Handle lengths range from 4-1⁄2 inches to 16 inches.

Electromagnetic On/Off Fan Drive
Horton, Inc. introduced the EC600, an electromagnetic on/off fan drive for medium-duty trucks, buses and off-highway equipment. The new fan drive features 1500 in-lbs. (170 Nm) out-of-the-box torque, compared to the 850 in.-lbs. (96 Nm) torque of Horton’s EC450 model.
According to Horton, the EC600 provides efficient, rapid cooling, and engages only when needed, approximately 10 percent of the time. Its precise engine temperature control helps vehicles to operate with maximum fuel efficiency and horsepower, the latter allowing for heavier loads and operation on steeper grades with minimal drag.
The company says it requires minimal installation and no maintenance. It is available for Freightliner, Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks.

Sealed Plastic Ignition Switch
A new, fully sealed plastic ignition switch is available from Cole Hersee Company. The fully sealed plastic ignition switches are available in a variety of configurations to meet all customers’ needs, including anti-restart, according to the company.
The switches have an integral Deutsch connector, are available with or without a key boot and the contacts are sealed to IP-67. The switches are rated at 10A at 12V DC, 5A at 24V DC and are tested to SAE J259 for ignition switches.

One Size Fits All Lift
The new X Pad frame-contact adapter for the MOD30 in-ground lift from Rotary Lift creates greater lift versatility to accommodate a full range of light- and heavy-duty vehicles. The X Pad temporarily replaces the standard axle-engaging adapter on the MOD30’s rear post, so the lift can pick up vehicles with independent front or rear suspensions, such as cars and minivans, ideal for operations servicing fleets with a diverse mix of vehicles.
According to Rotary Lift, the X Pad adapter uses the same arms as light-duty inground lifts to reach manufacturer recommended pick-up points on cars, light trucks and vans. Rated load capacity using the adapter is 9,000 lbs.

Aftermarket Clutch Kits
Eaton Corporation introduces an easy-order replacement kit for Fuller clutches that combines needed clutch and transmission components into one convenient package, the company says. The kits are available for the RT Series and FR Series for both of Eaton’s Easy-Pedal and Solo clutch designs.
According to Eaton, parts in the kit are genuine OEM quality and kits contain the replacement clutch, four clutch release shaft bushings, front bearing cover gasket, outer and inner input shaft snap rings, shift lever tower gasket, front bearing cover, clutch housing gasket, input shaft bearing, pilot bearing, input shaft assembly, clutch brake and clutch release fork. The kits, Eaton says, are available for virtually all makes and models of North American medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

Hunter has introduced the WT200 series premium alignment system for heavy-duty trucks which introduces both hardware and software advances that, the company says, improves the efficiency and accuracy of heavy- and light-duty alignment service.
Among the improvements are a wide selection of new cabinet and widescreen LCD monitor configurations and the company’s WinAlign HD software that has step-by-step procedures for technicians to optimize alignments for over 50 heavy-duty axle configurations.
