Shop Technology White Paper
Panasonic Computer Solutions Company, which makes Panasonic Toughbook brand mobile computers, released a white paper titled The Role of Rugged Mobile Computing in Overhaul, Service & Maintenance Operations. The new resource, produced by Larstan Business Reports, is said to address the strategic, operational and technological issues that are addressed by rugged mobile technologies designed for maintenance and service managers. It can be downloaded at www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/transp.asp.
“There is a service technician crisis impacting multiple transportation markets,” said Bill Presler, senior business development manager, Strategic Markets, Panasonic Computer Solutions Company. “New technicians are not entering the ranks as fast as the senior technicians are leaving, vehicles are becoming increasingly complex and in some markets, the number of service bays per vehicle is on the decline. Because of this shift, maintenance and service managers are trying to find ways to do more with less. One proven way to do this is to create a mobile, integrated service bay computing solution that enables the technician to do more while at the vehicle. Our new white paper sheds light on this aspect of the service bay issue.”
The white paper includes examples of how companies such as Harley Davidson, Toyota and Volvo have used technology to improve their service operations.

On-/Off-highway Drive Axle
Tuthill Drive Systems introduced EZ Trac, a steerable, hydraulic drive axle that the company says allows trucks to alternate “on the go” between on- and off-highway readiness with a flick of a cab-mounted switch.
EZ Trac can be retrofitted on Class 6-8 vehicles. The company says it does not alter the truck’s ride height – maintaining the existing steering angles and suspension – and installation takes approximately one-third the time versus a mechanical axle.
Additionally, according to Tutill, EZ Trac is lighter weight for additional payload and features “superior handling by controlling the amount of power that is brought to the front wheels, compared to mechanical axles that control power to the whole truck.”

Toyo Premium Truck Tires
Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. introduced the new M154 all-steel regional highway tire for medium-duty trucks. While ideal for steer applications, the company says it can be used in any axle position.
Toyo says the M154 was created using e-balance, the company’s proprietary design technology, resulting in a stiffer belt package, stiffer bead construction and optimization through computer simulation. The tire design provides longer life, improved fuel efficiency, greater endurance and more resistance to irregular wear.
The M154’s tread design provides even pressure distribution across the entire surface. It also has a 22/32nd deep five-rib design with deep sipes for improved water drainage and wet-weather traction.
The M154 will be available this spring in a 295/75R22.5 size, followed by a 285/75R24.5 size this summer and 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 (both in LRG and LRH) sizes in the fall. Later in the year the company will release 265/75R22.5 and 245/75R22.5 sizes.
Toyo also introduced the M137 premium steer radial for long-haul highway applications. This new tire was also designed with Toyo’s e-balance technology and has many of the same features as the M154. Additionally, the company says the M137 has excellent profile retention which reduces strain at the belt and ply turn-up edges. During operation, according to Toyo, special cap and base tread compounds reduce heat at the belt edge and excessive heat build-up inside the tire structure.
The M137 has a 15/32nd deep five-rib design with deep sipes, improving water drainage and wet traction. It is available in two sizes: 295/75R22.5 and 285/75R24.5.

Nexiq Technician Diagnostic Tool
The next-generation handheld diagnostic scan tool from Nexiq Technologies – Pro-Link iQ – features a large color display that technicians navigate using a touch-sensitive screen. The Pro-Link iQ is designed to allow technicians to read engine and other system diagnostic codes from a single hardware and software platform, rather than using many proprietary systems from different manufacturers.
According to Tom Kotenko, director of Nexiq Technologies – which is owned by Snap-On – the company jointly developed the new tool with Menlo Innovations and conducted extensive field work and research in its development and design. Kotenko says they went from “high-end OEM dealers to municipal garages” in their research with technicians and shop owners.
“We want the Pro-Link iQ to give technicians everything they’ve asked for, since they’re the ones who are using the product daily,” Kotenko says. “Their input is essential to the current and future success of the product. We believe that with their help, we’ve created a tool they’ll be eager to use – a scanner that simplifies vehicle diagnostics and makes the process more productive, efficient and accurate.”
The 2.5-pound device comes preloaded with several OE engine application data sets, Kotenko says. The standard heavy-duty software is the SAE J-1587 communications protocol, which uses basic nonproprietary information. The other systems include coverage for Caterpillar Bridge and Acert engines, Detroit Diesel DDEC III/IV and V, International midrange and OBD II light- and medium-duty trucks. Technicians have a free trial of five uses for each application and need to purchase an access code for use beyond that limit.
“It is ready for tomorrow and beyond, and is 2010-capable,” Kotenko says.
Regarding the engine makes not loaded in the system, Kotenko says they are working on agreements with those OEMs.
The Pro-Link iQ has a rugged design made for use in the shop environment. Kotenko says that in product testing, the device was dropped from a height of six feet with “little or no effect.”
The full-color touchscreen measures 8.4 inches, and the system can be updated through the Internet, Kotenko says. It has an internal 40-gigabyte hard drive that is the “same as used in an iPod,” he says.
The Pro-Link iQ is available now through Snap-On franchises and all Nexiq distributors.

Phillips i-Box Improves Serviceability
Phillips Industries’ new i-Box trailer nosebox offers improved serviceability and reduced wiring complexity, the company said.
The i-Box, now available for retrofit or OEM installation, will “handle the expanding electronic requirements of today’s trailer,” such as anti-lock brakes, trailer tracking, on-board weigh systems and lighting, the company said.
William Phillips, director of sales for Phillips, says the company developed the i-Box, short for Information Box, at the request of a major U.S. carrier frustrated by the small working space in standard trailer noseboxes and crammed wires that result in pinching and pull-out. The result is a trailer nosebox that is 35 percent larger than conventional styles and features other time- and money-saving improvements, he said.
Among the other features of the i-Box, Phillips said, are:
- A hinged lid and weather-proof design;
- Circuit breakers that can be changed in seconds; and
- The Phillips seven-way QCS Quick Connect Socket for easy replacement.
Additionally, Phillips says, the i-Box houses the company’s Permalogic Trailer Dome Lamp Controller to automatically control trailer dome lamps and has room for flash memory to store things such as trailer schematics and bills of material.
The i-Box can be retrofitted to trailers in 30 minutes or less, Phillips says, and installation schematics are available online at www.phillipsind.com. It is compatible with a wide range of trailer models, such as dry vans, refrigerated and doubles, and nearly all trailer makes.

Espar Anti-idling Heating Systems
Anti-idling technology manufacturer Espar Heater Systems has introduced three new products: The Hybernator-On Frame, the Hybernator-In Frame and the Baire Necessity System.
“We’ve taken what our customers have asked us, and we’ve made changes to accommodate that,” says John Bishop, vice president of sales for Espar.
According to Bishop, some of the benefits of these innovative systems are idling reduction, fuel savings (of up to $35 per day), local and regional legislation compliance, and engine and component wear reduction. Anti-idling systems will also help to lower the country’s oil dependence and to get a cleaner environment, Bishop says.
The Hybernator-On Frame system uses the California Air Resources Board-approved Hydronic 5 heater to provide engine-off heat to the cab, the engine and the fuel system; circulates engine coolant; and allows quick starts in the coldest environments.
The Hybernator-In Frame system “is based on the On-Frame system, but enables the installation of the unit between the frame rails without drilling,” said Espar’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications John Dennehy.
Although the third system, the Baire Necessity, also provides engine-off heat to the cab, it does not require the permanent installation of Espar’s CARB-approved Airtronic D2 bunk heater. This window-mounted system can be conveniently transported in the truck or easily moved from one truck to another. Also, “freight terminals can supply them to drivers for temporary no-idle relief,” says Dennehy.
Espar’s heater systems require 12- or 24-volt battery systems and gasoline or diesel as an on-board fuel.
