Stertil-Koni Adds In-ground Scissor Lift
With its acquisition of Fleet America Service Technology, Stertil-Koni has added a shallow-pit designed heavy-duty scissors lift to its product line. An alternative to piston lifts, the ECO Lift is an axle-engaging multi-scissors lift that emerges from a shallow pit. The company says the ECO Lift is machined with tolerances to one thousandth of one inch and is ANSI/ALI ALCTV-2006 certified.

The lift is designed to allow technicians to have easy access to wheel and brake assemblies and comes with a variety of adapters that will accommodate any axle configuration, according to the company; the lift also features a safety locking mechanism to help prevent unprompted lift descent. Its collapsible design makes it small enough to require only a 34-inch-deep pit instead of one that is six to nine feet deep for traditional axle-engaging piston-style lifts, Stertil-Koni says. The ECO Lift’s ultra-shallow pit requirements and bolt-in design allow for easy installation, according to the company, and it also can be removed and reinstalled with ease.

In addition to being compact (25 inches tall, 40 inches wide and 22 inches front to back, when collapsed) the ECO Lift has 30,000 pounds of lifting capacity, and multiple lift configurations accommodating 60,000 pounds and 90,000 pounds also are available. The ECO Lift, which can be controlled by a remote pendant, can operate on seven gallons of oil as opposed to traditional hydraulic piston-style lifts that use between 56 and 90 gallons, according to the company.

Hunter’s B400T Heavy-duty Brake Tester
New enforcement regulations from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration allow Hunter’s B400T Brake Tester to be used to test brake compliance without a follow-up physical inspection to take non-complying vehicles out of service, the company announced. In 30 seconds, the B400T determines whether a vehicle can continue to its destination or should be taken out of service for further inspection and repair, according to the company.

The B400T utilizes a PC-based system with Hunter’s proprietary WinSI software to measure brake forces and vehicle weight at each wheel on multi-axle vehicles such as tractors and semi-trailers, tandem-axle tractors and buses; and two-axle vehicles such as passenger cars and light trucks, the company says. Single-, tandem- and triple-axle vehicles can be tested with full loads.

To perform the test, a technician drives the vehicle onto the tester plates and applies the brakes, according to Hunter; the precision load cells within the plates automatically measure a variety of brake performance conditions, which then are digitally transferred to the computer, analyzed and displayed on the monitor in color-coded charts.

Tractor-Trailer.net Now Includes Color Air Brake Diagrams
Mitchell 1, a Snap-on Company, has added color air brake diagrams to its June update of Tractor-Trailer.net, a web-based truck repair information resource. The company says the pneumatic diagrams include the same widely used features as the Tractor-Trailer.net electrical wiring diagrams and the line colors were designed to conform to the Technology & Maintenance Council’s Recommended Practice 423.

Mitchell 1 says the diagrams are crisp and readable at any zoom level, and each mirrors the colors of the pneumatic brake lines on the truck. Additionally, using Mitchell 1’s CircuitSelect feature, a technician can highlight the brake line he’s working on so he can focus his attention where it’s needed to quickly and accurately diagnose the problem and make the required repair.

For consistency, each air brake diagram is oriented the same, regardless of manufacturer, with the front brake chambers appearing at the top and the rear brake chambers at the bottom. From make to make, the components such as the compressor, service brake chambers, spring brakes, relays and valves are easily identifiable with consistent icons. Another feature to assist technicians in finding the problem is the searchable text included in the diagrams that will take the user directly to the probable location on the diagram.

New Tool Lets Technicians Hear Problems
Tracer Products introduced the Tracerline Marksman ultrasonic diagnostic tool that converts and amplifies inaudible ultrasonic sound into audible “natural” sound. According to the company, service technicians can use the new tool to easily hear sounds that signify problems such as air brake leaks, gear and bearing wear, as well as vacuum, EVAP system, exhaust, refrigerant and passenger compartment leaks.

Tracer says the Marksman uses a two-tiered process to ensure accurate diagnosis: first, the receiver unit converts inaudible sound into audible sound using a process known as heterodyning; second, the receiver’s Sound Signal Technology fine-tunes the audible sound into the natural sound emitted by the defect itself. A 10-bar LED display indicates the intensity of incoming signals from the problem source to aid in the diagnosis.

The TP-9370 Marksman Master Kit comes with a receiver, full-sized headphones, two probes, and an ultrasonic emitter that allows technicians to test for faulty seals, gaskets and weather stripping in passenger compartments, trailer bodies and other unpressurized enclosures. When attached to the receiver, the 12-inch hollow probe accentuates air sounds, while the solid contact probe accentuates sounds of wear or grinding inside gears.
