U.S. diesel price falls further

The national average price of a gallon of diesel dropped again, declining 4.2 cents the week ended March 9 to $2.045. The price is $1.77 less than a year ago.

Since its record high of $4.764 announced July 14, the weekly national average has dropped $2.72, down 57 percent from the peak price. Except for one week, the fuel price has declined for several weeks, coinciding with the current economic slump.

For the latest week, average prices declined in all regions tracked by the U.S. Department of Energy. New England is most expensive region at $2.434, while the price in the Midwest dipped below $2 at $1.988.
