Northwood University recently announced the appointment of Larry Silvey as chair of its Aftermarket Management Program at the school’s Midland, Mich. campus, replacing James John who retired in June.Larry Silveysized jpg

“It was a difficult process as we had many qualified applicants in which Larry was chosen from a pool of three strong finalists,” said Dr. Keith A. Pretty, president and CEO at Northwood University.

In addition to his new position as chair of the Aftermarket Management Program Silvey was named editorial director emeritus for Advanstar Automotive Group in Irvine, Calif. In his position at Advanstar, Silvey assisted in the acquisition of magazine properties, managed sales and editorial staffs, created and sold special projects, and conceptualized and implemented editorial, sales and marketing plans for all three Automotive Group magazines and their electronic properties. He helped determine the group’s overall strategy and direction and had been the lead ambassador for most of his 11 years while at Advanstar, working with industry leaders, readers, associations and agencies. Silvey previously held positions as editor-in-chief of Aftermarket Business magazine, vice president of public relations for The Urda Company and associate publisher/editor-in-chief of Jobber Retailer magazine.

“We are excited to have Larry on board,” said Dr. Timothy G. Nash, vice president for Strategic and Corporate Alliances. “I have known him for years and feel that he will be a valuable asset to the university and the industry as a whole.”

Silvey earned a B.S. in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and his M.A in mass media communications from the University of Akron. Academic Dean Dr. Lance Lewis added, “Our academic team is greatly enhanced by the addition of Larry Silvey.”

He was awarded the Northwood University Automotive Aftermarket Management Education Award in 2002, won three straight International Automotive Media Awards from 2003-2005, and was awarded the Advanstar Editorial Excellence Award in 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2001.
