Navistar 13-liter engine gets okay from EPA

Navistar’s 13-liter engine got its long-awaited green light from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this week.

The government agency gave its stamp of approval to the MaxxForce 13 with SCR, and Navistar says it expects to deliver the first 13-liter ProStar units later this month.

“EPA certification of our proprietary 13-liter engine with SCR completes our transition to SCR-based technology for our heavy-duty engines,” Jack Allen, Navistar executive vice president and chief operating officer, says.

The company introduced its first SCR-based commercial trucks in North America late last year with the ProStar powered with the Cummins ISX 15-liter engine.

The 13-liter engine’s approval now gives Navistar a complete lineup of SCR engines for its Class 8 International line.
