Meritor makes donation to aid Louisiana flood relief efforts

Meritor has donated $5,000 to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts in Denham Springs, La., which was hard-hit by devastating flooding in August.

The company made the contribution from the Meritor Trust Fund to help Denham Springs area residents recover from the flooding. An estimated 90 percent of homes and businesses were damaged in the southeast Louisiana town of 10,000 people.

“We sincerely hope this contribution will help speed the restoration of this community and help its residents recover from this flooding that affected so many in the area,” says Krista Sohm, vice president, marketing and communications for Meritor.

The flooding in southern Louisiana affected tens of thousands of people and damaged an estimated 146,000 homes after several days of heavy rainfall caused rivers and creeks to overflow. At least 30,000 people were evacuated from submerged vehicles and flooded homes.

The American Red Cross has been leading the relief efforts. It estimates the relief could cost up to $40 million, as its workers continue to help people recover from the disaster, Meritor says.

“We appreciate the support of Meritor to help get the families who have lost everything get back on their feet,” says Kearny Gay of the Louisiana Red Cross. “The American Red Cross continues to help thousands of people in Louisiana in what is the worst natural disaster to hit the United States since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.”
