Dana Holding Corporation has announced more upgrades to its Spicer Life Series (SPL) heavy-duty universal joints product line. Dana introduced enhancements to its SPL-250 models in Aug. 2010, and has followed that with recent improvements to the SPL-170 model.
The new SPL-170 universal joint now features a bearing package that includes larger needle bearings, a special Viton synthetic seal and a thermoplastic seal guard. Dana said the new improvements are designed to increase capacity, improve grease retention and serviceability, and exclude contaminants. In addition to those changes, Dana said the SPL-170 also now features a new premium synthetic lubricant to improve bearing life.
“All Spicer SPL driveshaft assemblies for heavy-duty applications now include these important product improvements,” says Tom DeHaven, Dana senior manager of Driveshaft Products. “We strive to continuously deliver value and innovation to all of our end-user and original-equipment manufacturers (OEM) customers.”
According to Dana, the new SPL-170 has a torque capacity rating of 12,550 lbs, and is designed for Class 8 main and tandem drive inter-axle driveshaft applications. The SPL-170 is said to improve dynamic bearing capacity by up to 20 percent, and the SPL-250 is said to improve capacity by up to 40 percent. Warranty coverage is available for up to three years or 350,000 miles.
