Eaton research facility adds EV charging stations

Updated Oct 24, 2011

Eaton3Eaton Corp. announced the addition of three solar systems and two electric vehicle charging stations to its Power Systems Experience Center, a full-scale demonstration, test facility and laboratory for training, testing and demonstration of Eaton’s electrical products and solutions. At peak output, the new systems will offset about 33 percent of the total power usage of the facility, which is located near Pittsburgh.

“What started out as a showcase for Eaton’s power quality solutions and products has evolved into much more in the past two years,” says Dan Carnovale, PSEC manager. “With the addition of the solar systems and EV charging equipment, the center now fully demonstrates Eaton’s expertise in energy management, sustainability and efficiency.”

The solar demonstrations include a parking lot canopy system that covers 12 parking spaces and generates about 23 kilowatts of power. The parking lot canopy system features the new installations of a direct current quick charger, which will charge an EV in about 20 to 30 minutes and a Level 2 commercial charger capable of charging a vehicle to full capacity in about four to six hours. Eaton has slated future canopy installations of an additional Level 2 commercial version and two Level 2 Residential charging stations.

A rooftop solar demonstration system also was installed, generating about 10 kW of power for special testing and research and development, such as DC arc fault detection. A third solar generation system, featuring Eaton’s new S-Max 250 kW inverter, will be integrated into a future parking lot canopy system expansion. All three solar demonstration systems utilize Eaton’s electrical balance of system equipment, including inverters, combiner boxes, meters and solar DC disconnects.
