New front steer axle from Hendrickson

Updated May 3, 2012

Hendrickson AxleHendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems announces the Steertek NXT axle now is available on select International truck models.

Steertek NXT is the next generation of Hendrickson’s Steertek fabricated front steer axle, the company says. The axle is the standard axle offering on International ProStar, TranStar and LoneStar models.

According to Hendrickson, the axle includes continuous beam architecture that minimizes stress points for added durability while providing a superior strength- to-weight ratio. The rigid, box-shaped cross section of the axle resists horizontal, vertical and twisting forces more effectively than traditional I-beams and is designed to manage the increased brake torque resulting from the recently updated FMVSS-121 stopping distance regulations, the company says. For brake option flexibility, the axle is said to be compatible with both drum and disc brakes with either 5/8 in. or 3/4 in. fasteners.

“We are pleased to provide fleets and owner-operators with new innovations in front steer axle technology by offering Steertek NXT. Providing an axle that accommodates multiple brake solutions to help meet the new stopping distance regulations has been a priority for Hendrickson. The launch of Steertek NXT demonstrates our philosophy of continuous product innovation and our commitment to the commercial vehicle market,” says Doug Sanford, vice president and general manager for Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems.

Through Hendrickson’s proprietary design and manufacturing process, Steertek NXT saves up to 23 lbs. compared to traditional I-beam axles while combining rigid strength, outstanding maneuverability and reduced maintenance, the company says. Designed for optimal weight savings, the axle can be combined with Hendrickson’s monoleaf spring technology to form the Softek lightweight front suspension system. Hendrickson says Softek provides up to 85 lbs. of weight savings. The Steertek NXT also can be paired with Hendrickson two-leaf spring designs.
