Trucking Efficiency releases 6×2 axle confidence report

Updated Dec 15, 2015

Trucking Efficiency, the joint action committee of The North American Council of Freight Efficiency (NACFE) and Carbon War Room, has released a confidence report on the benefits for fleets adopting 6×2 axle systems.

According to the report’s executive summary, 6×2 axles offer a number of benefits: they lower fuel consumption, vehicle weight, and maintenance expenses and, in some cases, improve stability. Adverse consequences include less traction due to only one drive axle and increased tire wear.

The short-term concerns — higher upfront purchase cost and lower resale value — are expected to be mitigated over the next few years as buyers become more confident and scale is increased by higher demand, the report says. This will be especially true since 6×2 production is expected to double each year for the next three years, the summary adds.
