California's Clean Fuel Reward program could save truck buyers up to $120,000 in the state on an eligible battery electric Class 8 truck.

The program opened dealer enrollment and will start issuing rebates soon, a website says. It offers a rebate for qualifying customers who lease or buy an eligible new battery electric medium or heavy duty commercial vehicle, Class 2b-8.

Retailers must be a U.S.-based commercial vehicle retailer with a valid state business entity ID number, a valid tax resale permit and a valid retailer license number. At enrollment, the dealer will have to provide its name, address and primary contact information, a business bank account for reimbursement, a current W-9 and a completed participating retailer agreement.

Retailers will verify customer and vehicle eligibility, provide the reward to eligible customers, collect and submit information about the customer and the vehicle through a program website, and will receive reimbursement for the reward.

New battery-electric Class 2b-8 vehicles, excepting buses, that are for commercial use are eligible, the program says, and the reward amounts depend on class:

  • Class 2b can earn a $7,500 award.
  • Class 3 can earn a $15,000 award.
  • Class 4 can earn a $15,000 award.
  • Class 5 can earn a $60,000 award.
  • Class 6 can earn an $85,000 award.
  • Class 7 can earn an $85,000 award.
  • Class 8 can earn a $120,000 award.

For Class 2b, only public fleets subject to the Advanced Clean Fleets rule are eligible for the rebate. Hybrid, fuel cell, ePTO, zero-emissions conversions, and used battery-electric vehicles are not eligible for the program. For Class 8 vehicles, the award can be stacked with Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project and the Carl Moyer program. The awards can also stack with other state, local, regional and other incentives, such as the CARB Truck Loan Assistance Program as long as the combined total of all stacked funding does not exceed 90% of the total cost of the vehicle, excluding taxes and fees.
