Security experts show how hackers steal our information

Img 0175Work on a Minnesota murder-suicide case sparked the interest of Mark Lanterman into how secure vehicles are.

Lanterman and Brian Hill, of Computer Forensic Services, spoke during the afternoon session of the HDAW meetings Tuesday in Las Vegas concerning cyber security.

While investigating the murder case, Lanterman worked with Tesla officials to look into the previous night’s trips of the suspect in question.

This led to more work looking into the security of Teslas, which Lanterman was able to break despite the company’s efforts to provide the best security available.

Demonstrating a strong background in cyber security, Lanterman discussed the “how to” of hacking.

One man, named Rescator, wote the software that has been used in all major hacking operations over the past three years, Lanterman said.

Lanterman compared a hacker’s work to a farmer. He said hackers harvest the info, then sell it to the marketplace, which essentially, is Rescator.

He said software called Zeus is one of the most powerful sources of hacking personal information.

Lanterman compared Zeus to a hacker’s Swiss army knife. He said it’s like a soldier.

“Whatever you tell it to do, it does,” he said. “It sends everything to the bad guy.”

Zeus is typically disseminated through emails, often appearing as if it is from an email provider, bank or some other such source.

Brian Hill demonstrated an ability to hack into basic websites, citing examples of a city’s water source, a park’s webcam section and even a Sunglass Hut.

“We could go on and on for hours talking about your tablets, smartphones and personal computers and how they can be hacked,” Hill said.

He then spoke about the “dark web” which he said is only used by criminals and governments.

“Google only accesses about 17 percent of the internet,” Hill said.

Hill pulled up websites that create and sell passports all over the world as well as sites that sell drugs and illegal weapons.

“It is truly scary stuff,” Hill said. “It is out there and it is prevalent.”
