Firestone plant earns safety award

Firestone Industrial Products on Wednesday announced the company’s Dyersburg, Tenn., manufacturing facility has received its third Volunteer STAR (Safety Through Accountability and Recognition) award.

Firestone Industrial Products is part of Bridgestone Americas, the largest subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation, the world’s largest tire and rubber company.

The Volunteer STAR award recognizes the best-of-the best in safety and health programming and performance. Patterned after the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Voluntary Protection Program, the Volunteer STAR award is the state’s highest honor for workplace safety and health, Firestone says.

“The Volunteer STAR award is a testament to the Dyersburg teammates’ commitment to creating a safe work environment and is a shining example of Firestone’s core commitment to safety first, always,” says Jim DeMouy, Vice President, Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability, Bridgestone Americas. “Achieving this lofty status for a third time is a testament that from leadership to the plant floor, all teammates embrace safety as a core value. This same value extends to the design, workmanship and production of high-quality air springs.”

There are currently 37 Volunteer STAR sites in Tennessee, including Bridgestone’s Warren County Tire Manufacturing Plant. Firestone says the standard for participation in the STAR program is the confirmation of a company’s safety and health program, which helps reduce accidents and injuries. The program also allows employers to be removed from programmed compliance inspection lists for a period of three years.

“Firestone Industrial Products has met the evaluation standards required to receive this award by proving their ability to uphold an excellent safety record,” said Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips. “It is evident Firestone is extremely dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.”
