Mack announces updates to the Mack LR, TerraPro models

Mack Dump TruckMack LR and TerraPro models are now available with the Cummins Westport L9N natural gas engine, enabling customers to meet near zero NOx emissions levels, the company announced Thursday at the 2017 Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

“Natural gas continues to be a viable alternative fuel, providing a secure fuel supply and a steady price,” says Curtis Dorwart, Mack refuse product manager. “With the L9N, customers can take advantage of natural gas’ benefits and further reduce their environmental footprint.”

The spark-ignited L9N is capable of running on compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas or renewable natural gas. It produces 320 horsepower and 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque.

According to Cummins Westport, the L9N is among the lowest certified NOx emission engines available in North America, producing NOx exhaust emissions that are 90 percent lower than the current EPA limit of 0.2 g/bhp-hr. The L9N is also certified to the EPA’s GHG2017 emission requirements.

Mack says the LR model is built specifically to meet the challenges of refuse customers who require enhanced maneuverability, increased driver comfort and improved visibility. With both 6×4 and 4×2 configurations available, the Mack LR model works for customers with tight urban or open suburban applications. Several control options are also available, including left-hand drive, right-hand drive, dual-drive and left-hand drive/right-hand stand-up drive.

Mack’s 11-liter MP7 diesel engine is standard in the LR model, delivering up to 355 horsepower and 1,260 lb.-ft. of torque. The LR model is equipped with an Allison RDS five-speed or six-speed automatic transmission.

Mack’s rugged TerraPro model enables customers to pack maximum payload into a compact footprint. Ideal for commercial front loading and rear loading applications, the TerraPro’s shorter overall length provides superior maneuverability, while its slimmer cab width allows it to navigate narrow spaces.

The TerraPro also boasts the tallest forward glass area in the industry, improving safety by giving drivers superior visibility, the company says. In addition to the L9N, the TerraPro model is available with Mack’s MP7 and MP8 engines.

Mack Trucks also introduced a new multi-position seat for the Mack LR model, boosting comfort and ergonomics for operators in right-hand stand-up/sit down drive configuration.

Developed with Sears Seating, the new seat was designed and engineered specifically for the Mack LR model.

“Working with Sears Seating to offer a Mack LR model-specific seat will improve the driving experience for the LR model,” Dorwart says. “The new seat is more ergonomic, more comfortable and can help improve driver productivity.”

The enhanced multiple-position seat for right-hand operation LR cab configurations offers improved adjustability and comfort, whether seated or standing. Both the seat back and seat base offer adjustments, allowing drivers of varying statures to comfortably operate the truck and joystick controls. The new seat will be available in Q1 2018.

Mack Trucks has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Lytx, a leading provider of video services that help enhance the safety, efficiency, productivity and profitability of fleets.

Mack is exploring Lytx DriveCam, an in-cab camera system which records internal and external events when an abrupt lane change or hard braking occurs, as well as Lytx Video Services Technology, which continuously records external events regardless of a trigger situation.

Details regarding the offerings under this agreement have not yet been established, but Mack is planning to incorporate the systems into its Mack LR and TerraPro refuse models.

“We are pleased to announce an agreement with Lytx,” says David Pardue, vice president of connected vehicles and uptime services for Mack Trucks. “Lytx DriveCam technology can help improve the safety of those on the roadway, as well as inform fleets of drivers that may need some coaching. Lytx Video Services Technology also can help with theft prevention, job site monitoring and driver safety.”
