Updated Oct 22, 2018

The NTDA has released its 2018 Service Department Labor Hours Guide for its members.

NTDA says the guide includes average completion times for various procedures on dry vans, flatbeds and refrigerated trailers. Also included in the guide are:

  • Expected completion times for various equipment installations, including but not limited to: liftgates; floors; doors; hardware; electrical/lighting; wheels, tires and hubs;
  • bumpers; brake controls and air systems; and others.
  • Average times for painting and touching up certain parts and equipment is also included.
  • Employee compensation.
  • Potential opportunities to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Breakdown of the tabulated installation times for 20 types of trailer components and equipment, showing average times in terms of hours.
  • Key information about respondents’ operations, including data about personnel, shop financial metrics, and more.

“NTDA’s service department labor hours guide gives dealers a valuable tool in measuring their shop operations against other semi-trailer dealers and in assessing appropriate costs and compensation,” says Gwendolyn Brown, president at NTDA.

NTDA writes 133 trailer dealer members provided confidential responses to a host of questions gauging actual times for repair or installation across 20 semi-trailer service categories, including for suspensions, wheels, painting, electrical work, liftgate, roof assembly and more. Several repair metrics are also analyzed by semi-trailer type, including dry vans, flatbeds, and refrigerated trailers (reefers).

The Service Department Labor Hours Guide is available free-of-charge in a .pdf format to NTDA members. Printed copies of the Guide are available to members for $49. Nonmembers may purchase the Guide for $149. To order a printed of the Guide contact Carol McManamon at (810) 772-8360, or e-mail [email protected].
