FlowBelow earns EPA SmartWay verification, International factory option

Aero Slider Ata 2 300x200FlowBelow Aero Inc. announced at this week’s ATA Annual Management Conference & Exhibition that its Trailer AeroSlider Stage 2 system has been verified by the Environmental Protection Agency for its SmartWay program, and that its Quick-Release wheel covers are now offered as a factory option on all International LT and RH Series trucks, effective immediately.

FlowBelow says the Trailer AeroSlider represents a new category in trailer aerodynamics. Instead of attaching to the body of the trailer, the system is mounted directly to the sliding trailer suspension and travels with the suspension. FlowBelow says the AeroSlider consists of multiple components including Quick-Release wheel covers, fairings positioned between and behind the trailer wheels, and aerodynamic mud flaps behind them. From an aerodynamics standpoint, FlowBelow says the fairings control the complex airflow around the trailer wheels and the wake behind the trailer. The system is designed to complement other trailer-mounted aerodynamic devices such as trailer skirts and tails and offers additive fuel savings depending on the combination of devices implemented.

FlowBelow says the Trailer AeroSlider Stage 2 system was recently validated to provide up to a 2.07 percent fuel savings based on third fuel economy testing conducted by MVT Solutions. The most recent test, which was done in accordance with EPA SmartWay test protocols, demonstrated a 1.93 percent fuel savings, which exceeds the minimum requirement for EPA SmartWay verification. These tests confirmed an additional 0.70 percent fuel savings improvement over FlowBelow’s Stage 1 AeroSlider System, the company says.

“Based on our production costs and the positive fuel savings we’ve seen from extensive testing, we believe that the Trailer AeroSlider has the potential for achieving widespread adoption within three to four years,” says Josh Butler, CEO of FlowBelow Aero. “This approach seems to be the most practical way to address the aerodynamics of the trailer tandem without sacrificing durability or accessibility.”

Regarding its factory partnership with Navistar International, FlowBelow says its wheel covers also will be included on International’s New ‘MPG Package’ for the LT Series, which includes bumper effects, chassis skirts, and wheel covers. The wheel cover design provides instantaneous and tool-free access to the wheel end via a patented ‘push and turn’ quick-release latching system, the company adds.

“The new International LT and RH Series have proven to be some of the most technologically advanced, fuel efficient trucks available,” says Butler. “With the addition of the FlowBelow Products on-highway LT and RH Series trucks, we are providing fleets with even higher fuel efficiency while reducing total cost of ownership.”

The FlowBelow products included in the MPG Package will be warranted by International Truck as well as made available for aftermarket purchase through all International Truck dealers in the U.S. and Canada, the company says.
