Bergey's Truck Center hosts Delaware SenatorMark Bergey, president, Bergey’s Truck Center, recently hosted U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) at his dealership in New Castle, Del.

During the visit, Bergey discussed the dealership’s history, the local truck market and ATD’s support for S. 1839, a bill to repeal the 12 percent federal excise tax (FET) on the sale of heavy-duty trucks and trailers.

“It was a pleasure meeting and hosting Senator Carper at our dealership,” said Bergey. “Our team appreciated the opportunity to learn more about FET repeal efforts, and about the legislative process. I encourage other dealers to review the bill to repeal FET and share their thoughts with their representatives.”

Other attendees at the meeting included NADA Director Bill Willis, owner of Willis Ford in Smyrna, Del., Joe Tracy, president/owner of Bayshore Ford in New Castle, Del., and Kevin Worrell, commercial sales manager at Bayshore Ford. They discussed with Sen. Carper how repeal of the FET would spur the sale of newer, cleaner and safer trucks.

Sen. Carper is the ranking Democrat on the powerful Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, which is currently drafting a comprehensive highway reauthorization bill. Since FET revenue is dedicated to the Highway Trust Fund, which funds the nation’s highways, the Senate may debate this year whether to add S. 1839 to the upcoming bill.
