Mackes was heading back to his motorcycle after attending a fair in Bloomsburg, Pa., when he noticed a helicopter hovering close to the ground. He knew something was wrong and yelled for people to get out of the way before the helicopter crashed onto its left side and the propeller started shredding cars, the company says.
Mackes helped the pilot and two passengers get out safely by breaking the glass and aiding them in exiting the craft.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.
