Oil Poured Into Engine

MacKay & Company has released its 2025 DataMac Truck Medium & Heavy-Duty Lube Report, offering detailed analysis and forecasts for lubricant usage across Class 6-8 vehicles in the U.S. commercial truck market.

The report provides comprehensive data on lubricant consumption, pricing trends, brand preferences and market channel performance.

In this year’s report, MacKay & Company states total lubricant consumption in the heavy truck segment is declining slightly by 0.5% in 2025 compared to 2024 due to fewer miles driven.

Diving into the product detail, the company reports engine oil consumption is increasing 3.3% to reach 174.2 million gallons. This growth is supported by greater adoption of synthetic oils, particularly among newer equipment models. Meanwhile, coolant volumes are holding steady at 20.4 million gallons, and gear oil usage are declining slightly to 14.3 million gallons. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) also is experiencing a modest 2.6% decrease, though pricing saw a corresponding uptick.

The company continues in stating brand competition remains dynamic, with nearly four in ten respondents (39%) reporting a switch in lubricant suppliers this year. While established brands maintain a dominant presence, market share shifts suggest that end-users continue to seek better performance and pricing.

Looking ahead, MacKay & Company forecasts gradual growth across all major lubricant categories through 2030, driven by expanding vehicle populations, evolving emission standards and the continued move toward synthetic and extended-life products.

The 2025 DataMac Truck Medium & Heavy-Duty Lube Report is now available to subscribers through MacKay & Company’s online portal at www.mackayco.com.
Current subscribers can expand their market coverage to include agricultural, construction, and light-duty segments at discounted rates, the company says.
