A tragic accident that led to the death of a TravelCenters of America technician in Pennsylvania has led the company to halt all roadside repairs.

A spokesperson for TA parent company BP recently told Overdrive (Fusable sister company of TPS) the roadside-service shutdown applies to all repairs conducted “on the shoulder of any active traffic lane, including highways and interstates.”

TA states it will continue offering emergency repairs in safer, controlled environments including truck stops, rest areas and parking lots, though replies to questions about the availability of tows to those safer locations through TA’s Emergency Roadside Assistance service were not received as of Monday, 2 p.m. CT.

“By stopping work in high-speed and high-traffic environments, we are continuing to prioritize what matters most — the safety of our team members and our customers,” the spokesperson said.

In a message sent to customers last week, TA noted the danger posed to roadside workers due to distracted driving, which has accelerated as a ”persistent and deadly issue in our country, with concerning trends that show its continued impact on road safety.”
