Thermo King will switch to R452A refrigerant in December.
New, lower global warming potential R452A refrigerant will become the standard option on single and multitemperature truck refrigeration units in North America. It is available on the Thermo King T-Series self-powered units for Classes 5-7 and the larger capacity direct-drive TheV-Series units for Classes 1-4. Precedent units switched in January.
"This is another step forward in helping customers meet both current and future regulations," says Chris Tanaka, vice president of product management, Thermo King Americas. "Switching to R452A refrigerant will reduct direct CO2 emissions by nearly 50% per unit, which can potentially add up to significant reductions quickly depending on fleet size."
The California Air Resources Board will require for all transport refrigeration units in the state to use refrigerants with a global warming potential of 2200 or less by 2023. This includes Class 5-7 trucks using self-powered units. The direct-drive units typically used on Class 1-4 trucks are not included in the CARB 2023 regulation.
