ACT: Used Class 8 retail sales slump in September

ACT Research says it's data shows same dealer used Class 8 retail truck sales fell 5.7% month over month in September.

The slip follows a decline in August, and is accompanied by a drop in retail price 1.9% in September to $64,007.

"The September decline in used Class 8 retail sales was directionally consistent with, but greater than, the typical seasonal drop," says Steve Tam, vice president at ACT. "While auction volumes rebounded in the last month of the quarter, retail and wholesale channels faced continued headwinds. Higher average miles and an uptick in vehicle age contributed to downward pressure on pricing, but the market's longer-term trajectory remains positive, reflecting the resilience of carriers navigating a challenging operating environment."

Despite the fall pullback, ACT says retail sales are still 6% higher year ver year and average prices are up 12% compared to September 2025.

The data was reported in State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks.

While ACT showed a pricing slip in its data, Price Digests (owned by Fusable, parent company of TPS), reported higher pricing across its data set in September. Prices for 2-, 5- and 10-year-old sleepers are up across the board.

Two-year-old trucks were up nearly $3,000 from August to $92,330, the highest price for those sleepers since April. In the older segments, 5-year-old truck prices rose by just under $2,000 and 10-year-old trucks were up $110.
