Autocar launched a driver assist system, dubbed ADAM for Advanced Driver Assist Module, the company announced Thursday.
It says it's the first fully OEM-integrated advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) designed for the refuse and recycling industry.
"Our customers don't have the luxury of working in predictable environments," says Andrew Taitz, chairman of GVW Group, the holding company for Autocar. "They're operating on busy streets, chaotic job sites and in extreme conditions that demand more than a one-size-fits-all safety system."
ADAM works with the vehicles anti-lock braking system (ABS) and pneumatic breaking equipment to avoid collisions with people and property. The truck's system will not only warn about people and things in the danger zone, but will also stop the truck if the operator does not, and do so faster than human reaction times, Autocar says.

Autocar programmed the software specifically for the refuse industry, with features including autonomous reverse braking, forward colision warnin and automatic braking, a 360-degree pedestrian and cyclist detection system, enhanced blind spot detection, roadway departure alerts and traffic sign recognition.
"Severe-duty industries should not have to compromise on safety," Taitz says. "It's not just another ADAS — it's a purpose-built, severe-duty safety solution that protects our operators and the communities they serve."
