Decisiv has published a new white paper, “VMRS: The Next Level,” which the company says details a clear, simple process for using VMRS coding to enhance maintenance management and analysis. The new paper was introduced Sunday at the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

“Inconsistent usage, limited adoption and misconceptions have minimized the broader value of VMRS,” says Michael Riemer, vice president, Product and Channel Marketing at Decisiv. “Too many people in the transportation industry think that VMRS is only a nine-digit component code, a practice that only takes advantage of three of the 84 available code keys. However, this grossly undervalues the power and value of VMRS as the standard, universal language for service event and asset maintenance.”

Riemer says VMRS: The Next Level details how service supply chain participants can use VMRS to ensure more uniform process management, more reliable work order creation, more effective communication, and ultimately build a foundation for more accurate reporting and more useful predictive analytics. VMRS codes are routed in data, but Riemer says the value of VMRS goes well beyond data if a fleet and service provider use it effectively.

“Using VMRS does not involve memorizing a bunch of codes and numbers,” he says. “Best-in-class software implementations, such as the Decisiv SRM Platform-as-a-Service solution, leverage “friendly” names that put everything into simple to use regular language.”

Riemer believes the paper will be specifically valuable for the service channel. He says Decisiv customer surveys show VMRS adaption by service providers as a top fleet concern. Though VMRS has existed since 1970 it is still met with confusion in the service channel. Riemer wants to use both of his white papers to better educate the channel.

Decisiv’s previous white paper on VMRS, “Using VMRS Codes to Unlock Fleet Profitability,” focused on the basics by providing insight into a limited number of Code Keys for Assets, Service Events and Repair Operations. Riemer says VMRS at the Next Level builds on that information, and provides a clear, simple process for using VMRS for commercial vehicle and heavy equipment asset management and service events.

VMRS (Vehicle Maintenance Reporting Standards) is managed and licensed by American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council.
