ConMet's Nanjing, China, facilty was certified as a Four-Star Zero Carbon Factory (Type I) by the China Energy Conservation Association, the company announced Monday.

"This certification reflects our commitment to advancing sustainable manufacturing," says Chris Marr, vice president of global manufacturing strategy at ConMet. "We're dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint while continuing to meet the high quality standards our customers rely on. The changes at our Nanjing plant are part of our ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable future for manufacturing and the commercial vehicle industry."

The certificate recognizes the facility's successful reduction of carbon emissions. Type I certification recognizes the plant addressed both direct emissions produced on site and indirect emissions from purchased energy sources. The plant underwent an evaluation by TiGroup, a third-party certification body specializing in environmental and sustainability assessments. It included a review of energy usage, greenhouse gas reduction strategies, carbon offsetting measures and intelligent energy management systems.

To reduce its carbon footprint, ConMet converted its fleet of forklifts to electric power, eliminating tailpipe emissions and reducing noise pollution. The forklifts are powered by renewable energy sources, including a rooftop solar power system that generates around 440,000 kWh annually, or about half the Nanjing plant's needs. Remaining energy comes from the Inner Mongolia Sunjiaying Wind Power Project and the Zhexi Hydropower Station Project.

Carbon reduction initiatives are also taking place at ConMet iron foundries in Weifang, China.

ConMet is a division of Amsted Industries. It is a leading global provider to original equipment manufacturers and aftermarket channels in the commercial vehicle industry.
