Volvo cancels planned layoffs for February

Updated Jan 22, 2017

Employees at Volvo Trucks North America’s New River Valley, Va., plant got good news this week as the truck maker announced it has called off its planned layoffs next month.

The news was first reported Thursday by The Roanoke Times.

Volvo announced last month it would pair down its production and slash 500 jobs at the due to slowing Class 8 truck sales. The plan then was to cut from two shifts to one, but Volvo says recent events have led to a change.

“We’ve continued to monitor the ongoing reduction in new truck inventory across the industry in the weeks since the original announcement, and we’re encouraged by the trend,” Volvo Trucks North America Spokesman John Mies told the newspaper. “Based on this, we’ve decided not to go forward at this time with the previously announced reduction, so that we can maintain manufacturing flexibility as we continue to monitor the market situation.”
