Two more service-centric Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) recommended practices are rolling toward completion.

During individual task forces sessions Monday at TMC’s Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn., SAF-Holland’s Mike Colaccino and TA/Petro’s Homer Hogg updated attendees on a pair recommended practices in development that, when released, will provide enormous process improvement for the service channel.

Colaccino’s proposed RP on Parts Core Management for Service Providers has been written to improve the tracking of a core from when it is received to when it is shipped back to a supplier in a parts distributor or service provider location. During Monday’s meeting, Colaccino walked attendees through the document, pausing at crucial points to ensure the verbiage correctly defines each step in the management process. The proposed RP also includes a glossary with definitions of key parts and phrases found in core management, which ideally could be used to standardize core conversations industry wide.

At the completion of Monday’s discussion, TMC’s service provider study group zeroed in on the organization’s Fall Meeting as a goal for balloting for core management proposal.

Hogg’s proposed RP on Mentor Development is a step further down the line.

The proposed Mentor Development best practice is a 10-page document that lays out each individual step and factor service providers should evaluate in developing and mentoring program in their service facilities.

Hogg says his team is adding a formal summary and detailed definition of a mentor later today, and will introduce that information tomorrow. Assuming that information is accepted, the Study Group will send the document to ballot tomorrow afternoon.

Looking at the scope of the document, Hogg and TMC’s Service Provider study group has noted 12 key steps that should be built into a mentor program. They are:

  • Develop a customized ROI
  • Develop compensation package for mentors
  • Develop a uniform
  • Develop tracking and reporting system
  • Develop trainee materials (workbook; manual or electronic)
  • Develop training and development system for mentor(s)
  • Identify the number and skill level of mentors needs
  • Identify qualifications/requirements
  • Assess mentor candidate qualifications
  • Train and certify mentor(s)
  • Develop a control system to include ongoing evaluations and updates
  • Formally launch program
