Phillips Industries on Monday released its newest Qwik Tech Tips. The November/December issue focus is “Protect Your Vehicle This Winter From Cold Weather Damage and Corrosion.”

In it, Phillips addresses the history of salting and road chemicals, then goes on to list the impacts these corrosive elements can have on different commercial vehicle systems. The company also provides general cleaning guidance for vehicles, as well as specific cleaning instructions for electrical and air systems.

Finally, Phillips provides a few helpful tools for service providers and vehicle owners:

  • Chemical de-icers, such as calcium and magnesium chlorides, can wreak havoc on a vehicle all year long because they are hydroscopic chemicals.
  • Hygroscopic chemicals pull moisture out of the air, even in low humidity conditions. This means even in warm weather they can continue to do damage after winter months have passed.
  • Hydroscopic chemicals are small and can settle into tighter spaces and cracks. Vehicles should be washed frequently and thoroughly to avoid corrosion build up.
