Dexter Axle, a company that makes trailer axles, brakes, suspension systems and running-gear components, has notified the state of Indiana that it will close its plant in Elkhart, laying off 51 employees.

The plant makes trailer axles and related running gear components. Elkhart operations will be shifted to facilities in Albion and Fremont, Ind.

The first layoffs are expected to come Dec. 31. None of the employees affected are represented by a union, a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with Indiana says.
