Founded in 1939 by John C. Vander Haag Sr., the company started primarily as a scrap iron and metal business to support the war effort during World War II. It expanded in 1955 include new and rebuilt parts as well as repair services, Power Heavy Duty says, and now offers used truck sales, new and used trailer sales, full truck service, truck repair frame fabrication and equipment installation.

The company currently has three locations in Iowa – Spencer, Des Moines, Council Bluffs – and another in Sioux Falls, S.D., and has 188 employees. It plans to open its fifth location in Kansas City later this month.
