STEMCO has awarded Longview (Texas) High School senior Gus Williams a $5,000 scholarship as the winner of the company’s first ever Scholarship and Design Challenge.

STEMCO decided to offer the scholarship to any local high school senior who exhibited leadership and engineering design capabilities. Applicants were required to build a hydraulic robot made out of readily available items like Popsicle sticks, plastic syringes and foam board.

“STEMCO deeply holds key values of safety, excellence, and respect,” says Todd Anderson, president at STEMCO. “Upon reviewing Gus’ application and accomplishments, the scholarship review board was confident Gus has demonstrated those values through his application, design challenge, and interview. Gus clearly demonstrated leadership and willingness to serve the Longview community through his volunteer efforts.”

Williams, a recent graduate of Longview’s International Baccalaureate program, was ranked No. 15 out of a class of 453 students. In the fall he plans to major in Electrical Engineering at the University of Arkansas.

“It’s an honor to be named the first ever recipient of STEMCO’s Leadership and Engineering Design Scholarship,” he says. “Seeing my hard work pay off is gratifying and I am thankful STEMCO’s financial support will help me start my college career on the right note.”

STEMCO says applications for its 2018 Scholarship and Design Challenge will be available at all area schools beginning Sept. 1.
