PSI’s Commercial Fleet Tire Digest addresses tire pressure, operating costs

The latest edition of Commercial Fleet Tire Digest by Pressure Systems International (PSI) addresses how the use of tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) for trucks and trailers and, to a greater degree, automatic tire inflation systems (ATIS) for trailers can help lower operating costs.

TPMS, which monitors tire pressure and heat, and ATIS, which automatically adds air to a tire whenever the tire pressure falls below the cold pressure setting, even while the vehicle is in motion, can help lower maintenance costs, downtime costs and improve safety, according to the digest.

ATIS can help reduce maintenance costs by extending tire wear and improve utilization of casings for retreads. In addition, “ATIS pretty much ensures that unexpected loss of air in a tire is not going to take a trailer down while it’s full of merchandise,” the digest states. From a safety perspective ATIS reduce the chance of blowouts by keeping tires properly inflated.

“ATIS and TPMS generally have an ROI of a year or less,” according to the digest. “In addition to the quantifiable benefits to a fleet’s bottom line, fleets can help the environment too. Most shippers care about their carriers’ commitment to reducing greenhouse gasses and improving safety. Including technologies such as ATIS and TPMS can become an important part of your business reputation.”
