FET repeal bill adds co-sponsors

The recent 2019 National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Washington Conference brought more than 450 new automobile and truck dealers from around the country to Capitol Hill for two days of engagement with policymakers.

A focus of the conference was to urge lawmakers to cosponsor H.R. 2381, the “Modern, Clean and Safe Trucks Act of 2019,” a bill that would repeal the 102-year-old federal excise tax (FET) levied on the sale of new heavy-duty trucks and trailers. The bipartisan bill aims to increase the deployment of today’s newest, cleanest and safest trucks. Repealing the onerous 12 percent FET will allow truck buyers to invest in the best environmental and safety technologies available.

As a result of the dealers’ advocacy efforts, four members of Congress signed on as new cosponsors of H.R. 2381. They are Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz.), Chris Stewart (R-Utah), and Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.). The bill now has 29 cosponsors.
