Task force to develop extensive survey on tech pay

Updated Feb 28, 2017

Panelists on the S.5 task force at the 2017 Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn., took a look at developing performance indicators for maintenance operations, particularly as it related to technicians’ pay.

Task force discussion leader Amanda Schuier, of Wallen Truck Company, said the group sent out a 13 question survey to 500 fleet members and 100 service providers. Schuier said the survey drew results from shops with as few as four technicians and as many as 750.

The survey found that national tech pay ranged from as low as $11 per hour to a high of $39. The average pay for an entry level technician is $16.44.

Some of the comments discussed about technician motivation related to raises of 50 cents per hour for each ASE certification that they received to developing incentive levels for them.

Task force members said that money is not the only motivating factors for techs, specifically saying that time off and hours of operation also mean a great deal to techs.

The task force will work to develop a more expanded survey to get further feedback, Schuier said.
