Lively Technical College in Tallahassee, Fla., has become a standout institution in diesel technician training, thanks to its participation in the Get Ahead program with Four Star Freightliner and Daimler Truck North America (DTNA).
The Get Ahead program provides students with free access to industry-leading web-based training, allowing them to earn certifications recognized by top employers, including Freightliner dealerships, the companies say.
For Lively Technical College, participation in this program has led to significant recognition. Out of over 250 technical colleges nationwide, Lively distinguished itself as a leader in the 2023/2024 academic year, positioning its students at the forefront of the industry. In recognition of this achievement, Daimler Truck North America donated a new Freightliner 114SD heavy-duty diesel truck to the college, further enhancing its Medium/Heavy Duty Diesel Technician program.
According to Todd O'Neal, Diesel Technology Instructor at Lively, the Get Ahead program has been a game-changer for many of his students. "This program gives our students the opportunity to earn the same DTNA certifications that dealership technicians do," says O’Neal. "Some of our graduates have already secured positions at Four Star Freightliner, and it’s clear to them that OEM training is invaluable. We’re proud of our relationship with DTNA and Four Star and what it’s done for our students."
David Carroll, training manager at Four Star Freightliner’s Foster-Davenport Training Center in Dothan, Ala., emphasizes the benefits for schools as well. “The Get Ahead program puts students at the front of the line for jobs,” says Carroll. “When they complete the program, they’re fully prepared to step into technician positions at dealerships like ours. It’s a win-win for both the students and the schools.”
Through the Get Ahead program, students gain expertise in critical areas such as brake and air systems, clutches, drivelines, chassis basics, electrical troubleshooting, and electronic systems. The comprehensive training offers an invaluable head start in the industry, bridging the gap between the classroom and real-world technician roles. Upon completion, students leave 100% system-certified, making them strong candidates for jobs right out of school, the company adds.
In addition to the advanced training and certification, schools that participate in the Get Ahead program can eventually gain access to discounted training aids, which further enrich the educational experience, the company says.
This partnership is open to high schools and colleges, making it an ideal opportunity for young learners interested in pursuing a career in the diesel technology field. With demand for skilled technicians at an all-time high, the Get Ahead program provides a pathway to success for students looking to build a stable, rewarding career.
