Wabco to provide Hyundai with brake technology

Updated May 22, 2011

Wabco Holdings Inc. has entered into a long-term agreement with Hyundai Motor Company to develop and supply Wabco’s OnGuardPlus system.

The OnGuardPlus is an advanced emergency braking system (AEBS) that is said to reduce the risk of colliding with moving vehicles ahead as well as decelerating vehicles ahead that come to a standstill. It fully applies brakes in imminent collision situations. Wabco says it provides the driver with acoustic and visual warning. It also is said to autonomously initiate emergency braking, enables maximum possible deceleration and can bring the vehicle to a complete stop. It also reacts to stationary vehicles ahead, for example, when approaching traffic congestion.

Wabco will also supply the same Hyundai Motor commercial vehicles with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). According to Wabco, ACC automatically adjusts the truck’s speed to maintain a preset distance to the moving vehicle ahead. It reacts with acoustic and visual warning, engine control and, if necessary, by partially applying the brakes.

“As a leading global commercial vehicle manufacturer, Hyundai Motor continues to focus on maximizing customer satisfaction through world class product quality and service, and particularly through advanced vehicle safety,” says Sang Bock Park, principal research engineer for Hyundai Motor Company. “We are pleased to demonstrate our own technology innovation through early adoption of Wabco’s OnGuardPlus system, an industry breakthrough in emergency braking which, indeed, creates added value for our customers.”

“Wabco shares Hyundai Motor’s passion for excellence and we are proud to contribute our new OnGuardPlus system as it offers their customers significantly advanced vehicle safety and increased driver effectiveness,” says Leon Liu, Wabco president, Asia. “This new business with Hyundai Motor also further strengthens Wabco’s leading position in Asia as we continue to create value for customers through access to our global engineering network.”

“Hyundai Motor marks another major innovation achievement in commercial vehicle safety through early adoption of OnGuardPlus,” adds Jean-Christophe Figueroa, Wabco vice president of vehicle dynamics and control. “Bringing OnGuardPlus to market with Hyundai Motor highlights our mutual technology leadership as we progressively increase levels of vehicle safety together with other participants in our industry to substantially reduce the number of commercial vehicle accidents by 2020.”
