Green mobility, alternative energy and energy efficiency were among the topics of discussion at the Energy Evolution: Achieving Sustainable Urbanization in China symposium, presented by Eaton Corp. The half-day event, held in Beijing, brought together business, public-sector and academic leaders to discuss how they can work together to address the great energy challenges.
“Today sustainability is uniting environmental interests with corporate interests, and it is no longer a choice but essential for a company,” says Curt Hutchins, president of Eaton Asia Pacific. “Creating an enduring culture of sustainability is fundamentally important to all of us, so Eaton began advancing sustainability in 2008 by hosting the sustainability symposium in China. We are pleased to have been able to create this platform to initiate a high-level discussion on major topics concerning green transportation and sustainable urbanization, two pressing issues as different forces in society collaborate with each other to better navigate rapidly evolving energy-management challenges.”
Urbanization in China is taking place at a fast pace and will continue over the next decades. China’s newly passed 12th Five-Year Plan aims to raise the proportion of China’s population in urban areas above 50 percent. By 2025, it is estimated that China will have roughly 220 cities with a population of more than 1 million.
“China has made sustainable urbanization a major focus for the coming years with more and more cities moving to the forefront of sustainable development,” Hutchins says. “At Eaton we always regard it as a first priority to provide innovative technological answers to the major challenges in energy and power management and help achieve sustainable development. We are bringing our best technologies and solutions in the field of hybrid vehicles, renewable energy, green building and energy efficiency, which help contribute to the sustainable urbanization in China.”
Emphasizing Eaton’s sustainability efforts in China, the company also officially issued its China Sustainability Report 2010. It is Eaton’s third annual sustainability report in China, introducing Eaton’s achievement in this area and presenting a wide range of Eaton’s innovative green technologies and cooperative projects for China’s sustainable development.
