“Electric vehicle charging equipment will be the backbone of the infrastructure we need to create a cleaner transportation future with plug-in vehicles,” says John Wirtz, business unit manager, Electric Vehicle Infrastructure, Eaton’s Electrical Sector. “Eaton is bringing its leadership in sustainability, energy efficiency and power distribution to the electric vehicle supply equipment market and helping to build that critical infrastructure in North America.”
Eaton’s line of charging technologies includes a Level 1, a Residential Level 2, a Commercial/Fleet Level 2 and a 50 kilowatt (kW) DC Quick Charger, complemented by an EV Simulator for testing after installation and a network management software suite.
In 2010, Eaton provided the City of Raleigh with three high-speed Pow-R-Station Level 2 charging stations located in the downtown area. The units have a 220V plug that only takes four to six hours to fully recharge an extremely low battery. By September, Raleigh plans to install up to 30 public EV charging stations as part of the city’s rollout of plug-in electric vehicles. Eaton also has participated in the Plug-In Carolina initiative, which enabled deployment of charging station installations throughout South Carolina. Additional charging stations will be installed in August in Charleston, Conway and Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Eaton also is collaborating with Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. and Best Buy Co. Inc. to help facilitate and enhance electric vehicle ownership for the automotive consumer by providing chargers for Mitsubishi’s MiEV vehicle, which goes on sale this fall. In addition, Eaton will provide both the electrical infrastructural support and Level 2 chargers to MMNA’s dealerships.
Plug In 2011 is an interactive international gathering of automotive manufacturers, component suppliers, electric utilities, government agencies, the environmental community and academia. The conference will include expert discussions regarding infrastructure, market research, policy initiatives and commercialization.
