SKF now offers technical information on how to properly identify a PreSet Hub Assembly.

1 PreSet hub assemblies always use a bolt-on style hubcap for the steer and trailer axles. This alone does not indicate the wheel end is PreSet because conventional wheel ends also often have bolt-on style hubcaps. However, unitized wheel ends are equipped with a threaded or spin-on hubcap. If the hubcap is threaded, you can rule-out PreSet.

2 Only preassembled ConMet PreSet hub assemblies always are equipped with a spacer. If the ConMet wheel end contains a spacer, you can conclude it is a PreSet hub assembly.

3 PreSet hubs include assembly and/or casting part numbers. There may be other numbers surrounding these, but the part number always will start with “10” and after that there will be either six or eight digits. Either part number can be entered into the ConMet online hub catalog and the description will be displayed. Log on to: https://mis.conmet.com/HubCatalog/HubCatalog.aspx.
A PreSet hub assembly always will include the description that bearings are half-stand.

SKF rebuild kits for PreSet service requirements also are unique. Each SKF rebuild kit contains everything needed for servicing PreSet hub assemblies, including two specific and tightly toleranced half stand tapered bearing sets, an SKF Scotseal PlusXL wheel seal, an SKF TF Hubcap (when applicable) and a precision machined OEM PreSet bearing spacer. The kit also includes complete, easy-to-follow installation instructions and a registration card for a 3-year warranty offer.

Replacement Linings
Replace the linings on all four brakes of a tandem axle or at minimum both brakes of a single axle at the same time, ArvinMeritor advises. If you don’t, your customer could experience brake balance problems. In addition, not replacing a unit’s brake lining at the same time may contribute to uneven wear, reduced lining life, maintenance problems or drum cracking.

Warning and Instructional Labels
There may be instances of the warning and instructional labels peeling off the sun visor on Mack model chassis. To correct this condition, labels with improved adhesive are available. If your customers complain of peeling labels, replace the existing labels with the new labels which have improved adhesive.

When replacing the labels, the sun visor must be cleaned thoroughly with alcohol and dried before the replacement labels are applied. Peel the paper backing from the label and apply the label to the sun visor using even pressure to avoid air bubbles. For best results, a small roller can be used to apply even pressure across the label.
