New white paper says coronavirus only the ‘tip of the commercial vehicle iceberg’

Gene Ely of the Heavy Duty Marketing Academy has published a white paper, “The Coronavirus Storm is Only The Tip of the Commercial Vehicle Iceberg,” which addresses how the current COVID-19 pandemic is forcing changes in the heavy-duty truck, trailer and equipment industries.

Ely states the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is demonstrating how essential trucking and transportation are to the country, which in turn is showing how important parts and service operations are to keeping the country going. As Ely states early in his white paper, “the only bond holding our country together at this point is trucks are continuing to deliver every necessity of life …while truck support services play an essential role.”

Ely says it is those supporting businesses that must be learning and evolving at this time.

He writes, “Field selling has quickly evolved into a combination of phone, e-commerce and other online activities. As  mentioned, this trend was well underway prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and was inevitable because we live in an information-rich and time-poor society. In fact, many have ironically referenced this information explosion as an ‘infodemic’ of too much data, creating an over-exposure of traditional marketed information at a dizzying rate of new industry products and services.”

He goes on to say coronavirus has hastened the reality of marketing automation and an e-commerce transition that now appears to be in full swing. He says businesses that are able to withstand the current crisis will do so by capitalizing on changes they are making now, and making them core assets of their businesses moving forward.

In an industry that is increasingly filling with Millennials and will soon welcome Generation Z, Ely says investments now will make pay dividends down the road.

“The best option to take advantage of the new post-virus business rebound is to catch the marketing automation wave that’s sweeping across the new generational landscape,” he states.
