Final thoughts on the year

Yesterday I posted a blog on Successful Dealer highlighting my top stories of 2013. Before we completely turn our backs on last year, I’d like to do the same for Truck Parts & Service.

So without further ado, here are three stories I really enjoyed on Truck Parts & Service this year.

Making the Most of CSA

I wrote this article as the cover story for the March edition of Truck Parts & Service. It was an excellent topic then and it remains so today.

Fleets nationwide are constantly under attack by FMCSA’s CSA program. Aftermarket businesses that are focusing on offering fast-moving parts and preventive maintenance can really thrive catering to businesses fighting to avoid violations due to CSA.

Filling a Need

This cover story from June was another good one.

By finding the one thing you do better than anyone else and honing that skill, you can become an industry specialist. Customers like being able to go to an expert – the best of the best – when in need. You can make that be your business.

This article featured businesses throughout the aftermarket that have found success offering specialized services.

Fighting the Technician Shortage

The numbers in the introduction alone make this a personal favorite. Our country relies on trucking for almost everything, and if our industry shut down, everyone would feel it. And fast.

During his keynote address at the 2013 TMC fall meeting in Pittsburgh, Snap-on Chairman and CEO Nicholas Pinchuk spoke candidly about the risks associated with an industry slow down due to a dwindling labor force.

Speaking to a room of fleet maintenance managers and service providers, Pinchuk said “What you do is important to so many people. We need to make these careers a national calling. They are important to the essence of America.”
